The 1978 La Conseillante, to my great surprise, is a vintage that has hitherto avoided my palate! That said, it predates the renaissance of the Pomerol estate, as evinced by this example. It has a slightly dusty nose that is missing some fruit, even in the context of a vintage never known for its ripeness. There's an odd oxtail scent. The palate is dominated by sour cherry notes, light and too bitter for my liking, fading toward the finish. This could not have done its reputation any good at the time. I had not tasted this wine in some time and was concerned about its vitality. Its washed-out ruby color with a brownish edge gave me even more reason to worry. Although the 1978 La Conseillante still possesses some fruit, compared to the richer, more concentrated, more compelling La Conseillantes made since 1981, the 1978 is a lighter, meagerly endowed wine. While there is some charm, this is a one-dimensional, diluted, compact wine that appears to be on the verge of fading. Last tasted, 7/93.
About the producer
Château la Conseillante was built in 1750 and named after the proprietor, Libourne business woman Catherine Conseillan. The reputation of the wines quickly grew and her wines became some of the most expensive in the region.
