Score 93/100 · Drink 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2014

Grasso’s 1999 Barolo Bricco Luciani emerges from the glass with sweet tobacco, earthiness, wild flowers, herbs, spices and mint, all of which add considerable nuance to a core of soft, expressive red-tone fruit. Although the Bricco Luciani is quite sensual, it also has enough pure depth to drink well for another decade, perhaps longer.

Medium ruby. Grasso's Bricco Luciani is typically the most sensual and open of the wines. It displays a delicately aromatic nose with a pretty core of expressive fruit on a medium-bodied frame. It is a great choice for near-term drinking.

The 1999 Barolo Bricco Luciani, as is the norm here, is the most complete wine in the line. A dark garnet, spicy and expansive and with abundant licorice and smoke, it is very ample and dense, important in its size and depth, ripe in flavor and supple in texture, with an extra concentration that fills out the structure. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Medium brick-red. Complex, aromatic nose combines redcurrant, plum, mocha and tarry oak. Intensely flavored but quite tightly wound, even a bit youthfully aggressive today. But the tannins here are rather fine and the finish shows excellent grip.
