Dark ruby in colour, with raspberry and red cherry fruits on the attack. As it opens, expect anis, cassis, cigar box, sandalwood, unfussy earthiness, enjoyably fine tannins. Good stuff from this 22ha vineyard, today organic, then in sustainable agriculture. 40% new oak, director Alain Moueix.

The 2005 Mazeyres is a tough wine to taste. Hard tannins and wild, gamy notes dominate the wine's balance. Mazeyres is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It may be that the vegetal qualities of Franc were too much for the wine's balance. This is an awkward showing,
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2005 is a strong effort from this property, which usually performs inconsistently. This wine has a dense ruby/purple color and notes of black cherries, coffee, chocolate and deep red and black fruits. It is medium to full-bodied , still youthful, but close to maturity. This is a big, broad, masculine Pomerol to drink over the next 12-15 years.
Aromatic, almost leafy nose. Then broad weight of ripe, positive, confident fruit. Sandy tannins. Definitely for the long term. Tightly knit. (JR)
