2002 Clos St Martin

Although it does not possess the power, concentration, and intensity of this estate’s greatest vintages, the 2002 is a very good St.-Emilion from a difficult vintage. This deep ruby/purple-tinged offering reveals sweet currant, cherry, and black raspberry characteristics along with some of this property’s tell-tale minerality, good purity, medium body, and positive, pure flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2014.

From the same owner at Les Grandes Murailles and another all-new oak wine but in this case the fruit seems to have supported it better. The nose is fresh and toasty and the palate is big, sweet, round and succulent. There’s still a certain inky oakiness on the finish but many modern wine enthusiasts will enjoy this. (JR)

Very silky and refined with medium body and a lovely texture. Slightly hollow midpalate but pretty. Nicely done for the vintage. Best after 2007. 490 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2005
