A classic vin de garde, the dense dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 reveals subtle notes of minerals, black raspberries, cherries, and smoky oak. Medium to full-bodied, extremely well-delineated, and moderately tannic, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring. Patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

Bright ruby-red. Currant, black cherry, coffee, mint and nutty oak on the nose. Quite firm on the palate, with sound acids giving the currant flavor a juicy quality. Finishes with very firm tannins and good grip. Not quite as pliant as the '99—or is this just in an awkward phase?
