Deep, bright red. Powerful aromas of cherry, blackberry, smoky minerals and violet. Lush and creamy on the palate, offering sweet, liqueur-like dark berry flavors and a refreshing jolt of minerals. I looked for tannins but they were buried under the sexy fruit. Finishes bright and delineated. This is far more elegant than most wines from this vintage. The red wines from Vernay have been going from strength to strength in recent vintages.

The 2005 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge is dark ruby in color but totally dominated by new oak. The wine has some serious weight to it and excellent freshness, but the wood is overwhelming at present, which surprised me. Judgment reserved. Georges Vernay’s attractive daughter Christine has been running this estate for a number of years, and has not only built on the highly successful white wines of her father, but has also dramatically increased the quality of the reds. About the producer
A legendary name, Domaine Georges Vernay crafts some of the finest whites in the world, having championed Condrieu when it was on the brink of extinction. The estate is best known for its single-site Coteau de Vernon Condrieu and is now in the hands of the third and fourth generation of the family.
