Medium red. Aromas of cherry and raspberry liqueur, smoke and underbrush. Fat and pliant, with atypical volume for this wine. Tactile, chewy, broad and dry, but not cooked. Finishes quite full, with firm acidity and slightly dry, dusty tannins.

Something that was surprising during my end of June 2005 visit to Domaine Rousseau was the quality of its 2003 Mazis-Chambertin. Typically far behind this estate’s reigning triumvirate (Clos St.-Jacques, Chambertin-Clos de Beze, and Chambertin), it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with them in this vintage. This wine bursts from the glass with sweet cassis and black cherry scents. Medium to full-bodied and satin-textured, it is broad, lush, as well as packed with blueberries, cherries, and blackberries. Highly expressive, this bold effort displays outstanding depth of fruit as well as a long finish studded with firm tannin. Projected maturity: 2008-2016. Medium red. Superripe, musky aromas of red cherry, raspberry and spices. A sweet but firm fruit bomb in the mouth, with lovely freshness for the year. Then quite gripping on the back end, with firm acidity and a rather solid tannic spine. This wine still needs time in oak to absorb some of its tannins. In texture and structure, this is to the Charmes as the Cazetiers is to the Gevrey villages
