On the nose, the 2009 Rouget felt just a touch subdued at first but opens nicely with concentrated, decadent black fruit; touches of cassis emerge with time. The palate is dense and gains impressive weight in the glass. This is an assertive and quite bold Rouget. It fans out with brio on the finish. This is a typical, slightly brash 2009, showing just a bit of dryness on the aftertaste, but overall better than previous bottles. Tasted blind at Medlar restaurant dinner.

The 2009 Rouget has a well defined and detailed bouquet with truffle and rose petal tinged red fruit, elegant and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is slightly bitter on the entry with grainy tannin, tobacco and sage note infusing the red fruit. A dry but attractive finish suggests that it will not improve any further. I am worried about the evolution of this Rouget. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Tasted blind. Quite intense and inky on the nose. But there is some drive here. Sweet, reminiscent of dunked rich tea biscuits. A beginning, middle and end to this wine at least. Even if the end is a bit hot. (JR)

Very rich nose. Full-on New World style. Very sweet and luscious and then a tad metallic on the finish. (JR)
