The 1978 Domaine de Chevalier continues to age immensely gracefully, exhibiting an impressively youthful hue and a complex bouquet of sweet berry fruit, cedar, coniferous forest floor, camphor and black truffle. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's elegant and precise, with melting tannins, lively acids and a long, sapid finish.

The 1978 Domaine de Chevalier is a vintage that I have encountered three times previously. This was served from magnum like the last one I had in 2009. It has a lifted blackberry and pencil shaving bouquet, this one a little mintier than previous examples. The palate is open-knit with lovely balance and fine acidity. It is structured and masculine like many 1978s, with tobacco-stained black fruit laced with fennel and a slightly drier finish than I recall. Yet it is still drinking well and should give another decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner.
Relatively pale. Fine-boned nose. Audrey Hepburn? Very complete and well balanced though at its apogee. A very typical Dom de Chev with everything in the right place. Very slightly dry finish. I remember this wine tasting fleshier and more appealing. (JR)
