Score 17/20 · Drink 2014-2020, Jancis Robinson MW, Oct 2012

Winemaker Guido Rivella. Grapes are harvested from Gaja owned vineyards in La Morra and Serralunga villages. Both vineyards have a primary calcareous clay and marl soil. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless-steel tanks for three weeks. The wine is then aged in barriques for 12 months and then in large oak casks for a further 12 months. Mid ruby. Pretty austere but true. Firm and fumy with liquorice and treacle. Well done. But extraordinary that Gaja is selling to M&S! Sign of the times? (JR)
