Tasting notes
The 2000 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is another excellent choice for drinking now. Bright acids support a core of dark fruit, leather, tobacco, cedar, dried herbs and earthiness. In this tasting, the 2000 comes across as a touch slender, and yet all the elements are very nicely balanced. There is maybe just a touch of excitement missing; otherwise, the 2000 is beautifully done. Periods of stress leading to an early harvest yielded an Il Poggio with fewer layers and less volume than in the very best years.

The 2000 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio, from the estate’s best Sangiovese vineyard, is full in color, sweet, jammy, and alcoholic, with aromas and flavors of chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla to accompany the well defined fruit and an important structure of supple, sustaining tannins. Drink: 2005-2014. Importer: Veuve Clicquot, New York, NY; tel. (212) 888-7575
