The 1995 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is approaching its full maturity, and yet there is something about its profile that is so undeniably appealing. Dried rose petal, mint, orange peel, coffee and cedar lend exotic beauty to this fleshy, curvy Chianti Classico. I love the depth, balance and overall harmony. I would prefer to drink the 1995 over the next few years, as it appears to be peaking. This is a very beautiful and expressive Il Poggio from a vintage that was highly regarded at the time, and that continues to show well. This was the first Il Poggio aged entirely in French oak, the approach the estate used until 2001.

Rated as five star by the consortium, the year was preceded by a mild winter and followed by a mild and dry spring and summer, but with some rain in August and the first week of September. The overall result was one of elegance rather than mere power and 1995 is considered a classic Sangiovese year. The wine was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged for 18 months in 40% barrique and 60% Slavonian oak casks of 50 hl, followed by six months in bottle. 27,000 bottles produced. Mid ruby with orange tinge. Lifted with roasted notes and a little bit alcoholic. Hints of tar, sweet concentrated red fruits and oak (it always makes me wonder if the tar note is caused by barrique and not inherent to Sangiovese). Full bodied, multilayered and yet a little bit closed. Refreshing acidity and coating tannins, a little bit dry on the finish. (WS)
