The 1982 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is another gorgeous wine in this tasting. Still quite powerful and burly, the 1982 possesses tremendous depth for a wine of its age and era. There is a bit of gaminess and low-level brett, but not enough to dominate the wine’s balance. Orange peel, sweet pipe tobacco and incense add an exotic touch to this decidedly potent Il Poggio. Grippy tannins enshroud the incisive finish. Readers who enjoy old-school Chianti Classico will adore the 1982.

Undergrowth, iron, orange peel and oxidative notes. Velvety and viscous. Lovely succulent acidity and powdery tannins. Almost gripping finish, very tactile and more youthful on the palate than the nose. Iron and orange and pomegranate and more and more complex with aeration, this could do with decanting. Amazing development in the glass. (WS)

At Monsanto they consider this a good rather than an outstanding wine. Mature mid ruby with broad orange rim. Forest floor and dried cherry. Hints of noble decay, but with lots of depth. Meaty and savoury, cherry and a hint of chinotto . On the palate waxy and succulent cherry and the beginning of browning apple. Great tannin, but will probably overhaul the fruit a little in the future. Impressive length though with zippy acidity on the finish. (WS)

Monsanto's 1982 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a wine I could spend an entire day contemplating. The aromas and flavors meld together seamlessly as this powerful yet graceful wine flows from the glass. Vibrant red cherries, tobacco and spices come to life in a beautiful expression of the Il Poggio vineyard. This wine spent two and half years in cask. The tannins remain firm, and suggest at least another decade of glorious drinking lies ahead. The 1982 Il Poggio is a re-release directly from the estate.
