The 1972 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio emerges from a growing season that was extremely challenging pretty much everywhere in Europe. Fabrizio Bianchi waited into late October and early November to bring this fruit in. About 80% of the crop was botrytized. As for the wine, it is a wild, exotic beauty. Rosewater, apricot, orange peel, tobacco, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco give the 1972 its incredibly distinctive flavor profile. The 1972 is unlike anything I have ever tasted, and yet it has aged very, very well.
