Score 93/100 · Drink 2012-2022, Robert Parker, Feb 2012

This is the luxury cuvee of 100% Merlot from vines planted in dense spacing, fermented in barrel, and given impeccable attention from the grape-growing to the actual vinification and upbringing. A sensational, powerful wine that tips the scales at nearly 15% alcohol, it competes with grand cru classe wines, even though it is only entitled to a generic appellation of “Bordeaux.” Black purple-colored, with notes of chocolate fudge, espresso roast and blackberry fruit, the wine has super-intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and unbelievable concentration. Of course, this all comes from the clay and limestone soils of a special spot that the Despagnes think is their best vineyard parcel. It should drink well for up to a decade. The Despagne family make absolutely sensational value whites and reds. (See my tasting notes on their Tour de Mirambeau and Mont Perat in both red and white.)

The Despagne family, which makes some of the finest generic Bordeaux, is one of the best friends a consumer can have. This 2009 is their flagship, luxury priced, garagiste wine that admirably proves what can be done in a humble appellation. Made from 100% Merlot, it boasts an opaque purple color and tips the scales at nearly 15% alcohol. Fat, succulent, and broad, with terrific ripeness, purity, and flavor intensity, this gorgeous wine should drink well for a decade. (Tasted two times.)

Picked 25-30 Sep. All Merlot. Very deep. (See T he story of Girolate .) Some fragrance. Lots of meat and depth. Really taken to the limit! Lots of alcohol and tannin but there is juice and fragrance too. A bit alcoholic on the end. But there is real drama here. Just rather drying tannins on the finish. (JR)
