Tasting notes
Picked 15 Oct which is normal. Had to eliminate about 50% of production as green harvest. This was a first for Ribera which attracted attention and curiosity from the Consejo who rang them to ask why they had people working in the vineyard. 2000 was a great year for Vega Sicilia and Alion but not for all Riberas, some of which were overproduced. Very vibrant, healthy crimson. Clear rim. This was quite a productive vintage, as Tempranillo tends to be. Rather claret-like on the nose. Round and sweet and very alluring – the first wine to be definitively in the tertiary stage of evolution. Lovely balance and freshness too. (JR)

Bright medium ruby. Knockout nose combines cherry, black raspberry, baconfat, woodsmoke, leather, underbrush and pipe tobacco. Lush, pliant and sweet, with layered flavors of strawberry, coffee, leather, minerals and charred oak. Distinctly wild but with terrific fruit. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent length. Shows the Burgundian side of tempranillo in Ribera del Duero.
Produced by Vega Sicilia’s owners, Alion’s 2000 Ribera del Duero is a beautifully rich offering that was aged 13 months in French oak prior to bottling. A gorgeous perfume of espresso roast, smoked herbs, roasted meat, and black currant liqueur is followed by rich, full-bodied flavors, a velvety texture, and a long, luscious finish. Consume it now and over the next 10-12 years. Importer: a Christopher Cannan Selection, various American importers including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel.
