From a blend of one third each of the two Cabernets and Merlot and at a very respectable 13.5% alcohol 2011 Figeac is a lovely wine. Sweet blue fruit on the nose: cassis, blackberry. it is firmly structured, sappy and fresh and with a lovely inner perfume. Abundant fine tannin. Juicy and fresh. Really excellent.

Tasted blind. Mid crimson with a pale rim. Light, fully evolved nose. A suggestion of Cabernet on the nose. Light body and marked acidity. Fast fade. Just a general generic red bordeaux rather than definitively St-Émilion. Very light tannins. Ch Quintus? (JR)

The 2011 Figeac was quite sullen and unexpressive in its youth and I dished out some parsimonious score. Yet, two recent bottles have prompted me to raise my opinion on this vintage. It has an intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, rose petal and a touch of marmalade. These are aromas with ambition! The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, superb body, very focused and serious in style. This is a 2011 with plans on repaying those with the nous to cellar it for a few years. Very classy, this is well made. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
