Score 92+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous
Very fresh aromas of mandarin orange, minerals, truffle, nuts and earth, along with a suggestion of malic acidity I don't find in the other vintages in this series. Extremely dense but still totally closed in on itself; austere and chalky. Powerful acids (9.3 grams per liter, measured in tartaric) give this an exhilarating sappy quality. The Hugels prefer the '98 but I love this style too. Finishes very long, subtle and youthful.
