If Chateau Latour were produced in Rioja, it might taste like this. A blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 3% Grenache, and 2% miscellaneous grapes, this old vine, unfiltered offering is extremely tight, reserved, and backward, but, oh, what potential! Aged in both French and American oak, it exhibits a promising nose of black cherry jam, smoky wood, licorice, and black currants. Dense and huge, with formidable tannin, outstanding concentration, and an unevolved, backward personality, it requires 3-5 years of bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. Impressive! Bright ruby-red. Brilliant, cooler, more perfumed aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and red licorice. Sweet, dense and harmonious; impeccably balanced and light on its feet. Really exhilarating combination of flesh and acidity. The ripe tannins are perfectly buffered by ripe, extremely persistent red berry flavor. This is the least dense of the '94-'96 trio, and yet I find it to be utterly compelling juice-a sentimental favorite among the many outstanding wines I tasted in Rioja and Ribera del Duero in September. (I scored the powerful, still-young '94 92 points last year and again in September.)
