The 2002 La Dominique is a comedown after back-to-back successes. It feels very dilute on the nose where the fruit seems to have gone AWOL. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, rustic and broad-shouldered but monotone and facile on the finish. This is a disappointment. Tasted at the vertical tasting at La Dominique.

Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of raspberry, smoked meat and coffee seem a bit evolved for their young age. Flavors similar to the aromas, with a complicating note of iron. There's something sweet/sour about this wine, with a bit of dryness on the end. The 2004 shows more consistent ripeness.

Possibly more successful than the hyped 2003, the 2002 reveals herbaceous red and black fruits along with copious quantities of toasty new oak. Medium-bodied, soft, round, and nicely endowed, it should be drunk during its first 7-9 years of life.

Mid crimson, sweet Rolland Lite impression on the nose. Quite spicy, and meaty too. Nice fresh lively finish – a good drink. (JR)
