Serge Valentin has been one of the few truly independent voices in the Scotch whisky world since the early 2000s. For two decades and counting, the Alsace-native has published his tasting notes and scores to an astoundingly large and loyal audience with his characteristically good humour and impartiality in what can be a deafening echo chamber.   Despite being one of the most well-respected authorities in the industry, Valentin has always written about whisky in his spare time, very much considering it a pastime that he dabbles in for fun. This is somewhat of a surprise, given the many people who part with thousands of pounds based on his views alone.  “Contrary to what many believe, I’ve never been a pro and have never actually worked in whisky,” the jaunty Valentin is quick to tell me. “It is all a kind of super-hobby to me and if you ever see me doing gigs, for example at whisky festivals, it is always for free, for fun and for friends.”   Valentin’s “proper work”, as he calls it, is in advertising and marketing, where he owns two agencies which employ around 2,000 people. These agencies, he says glibly, are “supposed to pay for my whiskies…luckily, they do”. It was a very different landscape when Valentin started writing about Scotch in 2002. Single malts had been marketed for 30-plus years but there wasn’t the seemingly insatiable demand and record-breaking prices that are commonplace today. It all began when Valentin, armed with bottles of his favourite Old Clynelish and Brora, sat down and shared his musings on his aptly named website WhiskyFun. This wasn’t a vanity project or a vehicle for freebies, this was a man writing about the whiskies he loved, just because he wanted to. From humble beginnings, WhiskyFun has become one of the most well-respected hubs for commentary on Scotch. Valentin follows a 100-point scoring system, like some of the great critics in the world of wine. For Valentin, however, 80/100 is a good score. His methodology is largely unchanged. He will spend an average of 30 minutes tasting a whisky (he does, on occasion, score rums and other spirits) – this can increase up to an hour if it’s a “good one” and take nearer 10 minutes if it is a “bad one”. He always compares several similar spirits, almost always from the same distillery, and never scores “out of the blue”. He tastes “alone, using the same parameters” (place, time of day, glassware, water etc.) and always writes as he tries, and then publishes once a day.  His write-ups are always short, honest, and unmistakably him. After all these years, it’s dumbfounding that he has the time or inclination to produce the near-constant stream of reviews that appear on his website.    It’s fascinating to see which liquids he scores – and, sometimes more intriguingly, the ones he doesn’t. “The choices rather depend on what I get and what I source, but my sample library is much larger than my tasting capacity,” he explains.   This all started as a passion project for Valentin and it’s abundantly clear that that fire burns just as bright today. He never takes himself too seriously and is evidently ill at ease with any comparison between himself and the greatly respected critics in the world of wine.    This is, in part, because the role of a critic in spirits is nowhere near as established as it is in wine. There are leading voices in the Scotch whisky world who undoubtedly carry considerable clout, but they aren’t critics in the traditional sense. While they might be prolific in their output and have seemingly healthy book retainers, they rarely score spirits and if they do, their tasting notes will be almost entirely positive (often because they are in a producer’s employ). The closest the spirits world has to a Robert Parker or Jancis Robinson MW is probably Valentin – although, he wouldn’t agree.   “I would say the roles are more and more the same in wine and spirits,” Valentin says, “even if there are fewer actual ‘critics’ in spirits. But it is coming in whisky.”  Valentin does feel there is a need for scores in collectable spirits, as – like wine – there isn’t always the opportunity for people to try before they buy. But the issue is not black and white, as is true of many things Valentin and I discuss.   “I see that scores [in whisky] become more like stock market recommendations these days,” he says.“I’m not too happy about that but that wouldn’t be the case if spirits, especially whisky, had remained a reasonably priced commodity,” he says, before adding: “But the cardinal sins are what they are.” It’s clear whisky drinkers respect Valentin’s voice, as they flock to his site in droves. What’s less clear, however – as an outsider looking in – is how producers feel about Valentin’s refusal to kowtow and sugar-coat his reviews.  “Producers have never quite known how to deal with independent voices,” he explains. “In general, they prefer influencers that they can pay and control, even if their audiences are smaller and less ‘on target’,” he adds, “for which I can’t blame them. Fortunately,” he continues, “not all distillers are the same. Some corporations are smarter than others and that often depends on the people within.”   When asked why he thinks people return to his site, which doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles you might expect from an ad man and is as no-frills today as it was two decades ago, Valentin says, as self-deprecatingly as ever: “I’m not really aware of everything that’s happening in the reviewing landscape, I have to say. If indeed people keep coming back to my assessment, that’s partly, I believe, because I started early and simply because they trust me. Trust is number one.”   In many ways, Valentin’s website is a collection. It’s a receptacle for his innermost thoughts and feelings about the things that matter most to him. Valentin has always been collector at heart. With an interest in stamps from childhood, he then graduated onto watches, wine and then whisky. The father of three has a broad and eclectic range of interests, including music (“all kinds”), advertising, motorcycling, wine, watches, food and travel which he has nurtured and indulged. Throughout the years, Valentin has had a front-row seat to the evolutions within these industries and the so-called art of collecting.   “Old-school collectors used to buy what they liked, never what was meant to see its value rise,” he says. “In the old days, you had to travel, to make phone calls, to go to festivals etc. Today,” he says somewhat ruefully, “you can buy anything, as long as you’ve got the money.” Valentin was ahead of the curve when he made the choice many years ago to buy as many different Old Clynelish and Brora single malts as he could, simply because they were his favourites. At the time, and up until 2005 to 2010, all whiskies – even the rarest – remained relatively cheap. After 2010, it was silly season and whiskies you could previously source were nigh on impossible to find or prohibitively expensive for some.  Valentin’s favourite whiskies have become some of the most desirable on the secondary market. Old Clynelish, produced before the distillery was rechristened Brora, have gained a huge following globally as people were charmed by the story and the characterful liquid the two distilleries produced. Now Brora is set to be re-opened, these single malts will only become more valuable. While his collection is no-doubt impressive – exact bottlings are not disclosed – there are some unicorns which still elude Valentin.   “Rather bizarrely and inexplicably, I prefer fatter spirits and fresher wines,” Valentin says, “in both cases with as little straight oak influence as possible. So, fat distillates, such as some coastal malts, some Jamaican rums etc. In wine, that would be the bright whites, Jura, Savoie, Rueda, Pacherenc, Irouleguy, Alsace, Wachau and Andalusia.”    “I know oak is crucial,” he adds, “you just shouldn’t feel it as such, according to my personal taste. But I insist, that’s personal.” Oak is a topic Valentin returns to several times. He feels it is the low-hanging fruit when it comes to innovation in the Scotch whisky industry.   “Sure, there are a few innovations around the casks,” he says, “but all makers use more or less the same.” The woods used are usually more active, which allows producers to sell much younger whisky for a good price while widening the ranges at the same time, he says.   “I’m not saying that’s bad,” he quickly adds, “but not many people are talking about the distilling regimes, the stills and so on, which was the number one topic 20 years ago.” He continues: “It is now all about wood. But, when we talk about wood that includes their flavouring with other spirits, wines, or even whiskies from other distilleries such as some peated ones, which is the latest trend, to peat single malts by doing some in-cask blending rather than bother with brewing and distilling some peated malt. “So, cutting corners for sure but on the other hand, I believe the average quality has risen pretty sharply. So, all remains good and well…”  This seems to be Valentin’s baseline. The whisky world might have changed but he believes it is the same at its core. There is an increase in branding and marketing (which is likely a source of joy and consternation for an ad man), there are more malts, and for the past five or six years, more distilleries from almost all countries.   “I’m not bored yet,” he says in his frank way, “and in general, whisky has got better on average, even if there are fewer utter glories and fewer total duds.”  If a man with Valentin’s reputation of no-holds-barred honesty is broadly happy, then we probably all should be too.   Browse all Scotch whisky  or  read more Editorial

Bordeaux has seen a plethora of good to great vintages over the last 10-15 years most notably 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018... and now 2019. Speaking with some of Bordeaux's top winemakers in the build-up towards the eventual release of the 2019 vintage, has only further cemented the change in tone in Bordeaux in regard to the expectations of a vintage. No one today talks about a great vintage with surprise.  No vigneron in Bordeaux can say “it’s another vintage of the century” without a smirk. The discourse on vintage overviews has been forced to change. Looking at statistics from analytical data on climate, grape ripeness levels through to critics' approvals, wines in Bordeaux are much more regularly the result of almost perfect vintage conditions. Has global warming helped push Bordeaux into a modern-day golden era? What has been the knock-on effects of more regular vintages in Bordeaux? How long will this last and how will it change and shape the Bordeaux of the future?  Bordeaux is no longer a region whose Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot run the gauntlet to reach sugar ripeness. If anything, it is rising alcohol levels, hail, drought, sunburn and vine shutdown that keeps the vigneron up at night.  But these concerns are increasingly becoming better managed thanks to huge investment by many of the top estates using both technology and ever more advanced scientific data to better cope with the issues at hand. Even within this trend of excellent vintages, vignerons in Bordeaux have only got better at dealing with the new norm of warmer vintages. Arguably the wines of the warm 2018 vintage were better handled than the similarly warm 2009.  The bi-polarisation of the Bordeaux wine market Whilst the picture at the entry level end of the scale within Bordeaux is a lot more gloomy, with many vignerons facing real sustainability issues, no doubt further enhanced by the effects of the current global pandemic, the prestigious classified growths and other top estates are currently benefiting from a perfect storm.  More consistent vintages have led to an increased income flowing into the estates which has seen increased reinvestment into the property’s infrastructure to offset tax on profits. The benefit being huge scientific and technological investments into many of these châteaux with precision viticulture and vinification becoming standard practice in many of the top estates. From a region in which heritage and tradition exude from the grandeur of turrets and towers, it is behind the castle walls that you find futurism and innovation. Precision and transparency Whilst the weather remains the most important factor that the vigneron can’t control, the Bordeaux châteaux who can afford to, have made great strides in off-setting poor weather conditions with a shift in attention towards viticultural practices. Whilst the battle between Mother Nature and machine is still very much one-sided, innovations in the field, as well as the winery, have seen good to excellent results as standard in Bordeaux’s modern era.  Also the earlier start to the vine's growing cycles is pushing the key veraison period earlier (where there are longer hours of sunlight) resulting in being able to bring in the harvest earlier if necessary, to avoid the risk of the heavy rains at the end of the season ruining the vintage. Whilst similar developments are happening throughout the fine wine regions of the world, the sheer volume of premium fine wine produced from the top estates in Bordeaux means the regularity of good to excellent vintages at this scale is unmatched anywhere else in the world, giving them a huge advantage when it comes to reinvestment.  Behind these traditional, historic château walls is some of the most cutting-edge technology in operation in global wine production. From optical sorting machines to UV light technology managing micro-bacterial issues in the winery, these innovative techniques are producing some of the most precise wines ever to come out of Bordeaux.  In the not-too-distant past Bordeaux had been particularly susceptible to wine faults such as brettanomyces due to high pH, rising alcohol levels and extensive barrel ageing, but amongst the top estates today, potential faults remain tightly controlled. But the investment in technology is not the only reason behind the modern success stories of Bordeaux, but an investment in people too, with full-time viticulturalists operating in the vineyard throughout the year as standard.  An increase in experimentation has also led to more variety in both viticulture and vinification practices leading to more variety in structure and style in wines from across the Médoc and beyond. Experiments with different-sized vessels and trialling materials for élevage, whole bunch fermentations, intra-plot picking and vinification as well as investments in heritage projects such as the recovery of original Bordeaux clones that were practically wiped out prior to the devastating effects of the great frost of 1956 are all adding breadth and scope to the innovative side of today’s Bordeaux.  Tradition and terroir With an ever-expanding fine wine market in terms of both consumers buying fine wine as well as more regions producing fine wine, Bordeaux has never had more competition within the region itself as well as further afield. With this additional pressure, there is a strong ambition for each château to further distinguish itself. One clear advantage is their history; few winemaking regions in the world have the prestige and the back catalogue found at the top estates today.  Chateau Lafite Rothschild serving vintages back to 1881 at their 150-anniversary birthday party last year to a hall full of guests on five consecutive nights is something no other region could come close to pulling off. Despite this, the growing competition from other emerging fine wine regions around the world has forced Bordeaux onto its toes and lit the fire under many top estates to better communicate what makes the wines of Bordeaux unique. The Bordelais openly admit that they have had to look outside of the Bordeaux bubble and take note of developments in fine wine regions further afield. With Bordeaux wines almost always blends of varieties encompassing a collection of scattered vineyards, the discourse surrounding terroir was largely glossed over in favour of more generic phrases such as Pauillac‘s graphite minerality.  The seemingly flatlands of the Médoc are "flat" no longer, the top châteaux emphasising their “hauts”, their “grand-puy’s” and “moutons” justifying their classified status comes from distinct terroir, whether that be the raised grounds of gunzian gravel or the outcrops of blue clay or crasse de fer soils of Pomerol or the various distinct types of limestone found in different parts of Saint-Emilon. The breakdown of single vineyards and their influence on the blend is now regularly part of the estates' patter when describing their terroir and this more exhaustive investigation into its vineyards has helped better communicate what is special and distinct about each château.  Bordelais are quick to admit, that for a region whose historic importance is unmatched in fine wine production, they have in the past been guilty of following fashion. Perhaps because of their global impact, their fashion faux pas only became more obvious. Not just in Bordeaux but throughout the world of fine wine there has never been such a heightened sense of self awareness and an emphasis on transparency in wines.  Bordeaux too has adapted to this and while being naturally powerful, intense, long-lived wines thanks to the varieties used and unique climate, there is also a strong emphasis on the Bordeaux wines of today retaining a sense of purity and elegance too. The ability to be both powerful and elegant is surely Bordeaux’s greatest calling card. When interviewing Andrew Jefford last autumn, I asked what he thought was the most exciting emerging region in the fine wine world today, I was pleasantly surprised to hear him state Bordeaux, saying “I’m in awe of the progress made there over the last 20 years, particularly in terms of the understanding of tannins. Tannins are the key to quality in fine red wine. Nothing would help southern hemisphere regions making ambitious red wines more than a breakthrough in the extraction and expression of tannins in their wines – the hallmark of all great European reds. Red winemakers in general need to stop stressing about acidity and become obsessed by tannin. To learn about tannin, go to Bordeaux.”  The future of Bordeaux Despite the top châteaux of Bordeaux today enjoying a bout of legendary vintages, there are real dangers posed to the longevity of Bordeaux’s current success (along with many other fine wine regions of the world). How long will it be before global warming pushes the region to the points where heat and drought no longer make growing wine grapes viable? No doubt early signs are there.  If Bordeaux becomes too hot and too dry, vines will shut down completely and tannins will not ripen as sugars go through the roof. Merlot is already a concern for many and considering its dominance in much of the vineyards of the Right Bank and in a significant part of blends on the Left Bank, there is no way things will remain as they are. Whether clonal development, irrigation or winemaking techniques can rescue it seems at odds with the current emphasis on natural winemaking.  Either way, things will eventually have to change. At least for today Bordeaux classified estates are unquestionably enjoying a golden era of vintages where their wines have never been so transparent. In such uncertain times, it is not clear how long this golden era will last, particularly with the typical Bordeaux varieties we know and love today, but those who think Bordeaux is passé are failing to look in the right places. We were fortunate to have a one-to-one tasting with Jean-Charles Cazes, the managing director of Chateau Lynch-Bages, Chateau Haut-Batailley and Chateau Ormes de Pez. Not only did we have the opportunity to taste the fantastic range of 2019 wines from the estates, but we were also given the opportunity to dig a little deeper into what makes Lynch-Bages such a special and unique wine in Pauillac. Ch. Lynch-Bages's recipe for success Whilst there is plenty of talk in Bordeaux these days about restraining the extraction of tannin  during vinification and for many Chateaux this has been to their benefit, it was also comforting to hear Jean-Charles talk with tenacity about how a high level of extraction remains a huge part of the recipe for Chateau Lynch-Bages and today remains a key factor in the wine’s signature structure and its consequent ageing ability.  There is confidence in this method and the levels of extraction the estate can go to, whilst retaining balance in the wines is impressive. It is no doubt thanks to the distinct gravel terroir in Pauillac, which seems particularly present at Lynch-Bages, where the magical union between Cabernet Sauvignon and gravel soils seem to exude possibly more than anywhere else. It is clear that in the past, the Chateaux that lack that special terroir but have copied the approach and style have ended up with over-extracted wines and a loss of character and freshness. Whether it is the trend in the reduction of extraction, better technology for the handling of tannins or a better understanding of individual terroirs and their varying abilities to absorb tannin whilst remaining balanced, high levels of extraction is on the decrease in the Medoc. But thankfully Lynch-Bages has not swayed to the fashion, knowing that their terroir is built for such a purpose. 

The 2019 is a stunning wine and Lynch Bages does seem to flourish in a warm vintage. Asked where the suppleness comes from in the 2019, Jean-Charles states "rather than any restriction on extraction, it is more to do with the glycerol-rich quality of the Merlot in 2019 that adds wonderful flesh to the distinct Cabernet Sauvignon structural profile. It is this warmth of the vintage that brings suppleness to the wine as the freshness exudes from the
union of graphite minerality and mouthwatering Cabernet tannins." The 2019 vintage Whilst it was a warm vintage in 2019, Jean-Charles states that "the winter of 2018-2019 was very wet and with high humidity periods both in April and June which provided a huge amount of water reserves that meant the vines suffered no vine stress despite what was to be a very hot, dry summer. Temperatures at times were similar to those seen in 2003 but whereas then the vines completely shut down, in 2019 they remained active and pushed on through, reaching a beautiful phenolic ripeness in the tannins." The Echo de Lynch-Bages is also easily the best example I can remember tasting and for Jean-Charles the quality of the second wine is a great indication of the overall quality of the vintage.  He states "whilst the Echo has distinct vineyards closer to the river with more clay in the soil, how the grapes behaved in these lesser sites is quite remarkable." The IPT (tannin levels) between the two wines are different with Echo at 78 IPT and Lynch-Bages at 91 IPT. While technically Echo is therefore less structured, Jean-Charles explains that "the tannins tend to be slightly grippier in the Echo and with the general refinement of the tannins being a signature of the 2019 vintage, it has produced a very serious second wine." The Lynch-Bages specially cultivated yeast Vinifications at Chateau Lynch-Bages are quite particular in that since 2013 the property has cultivated their own indigenous yeast that originates from their vineyard. They worked with the University of Bordeaux experimenting with the yeast strains until they found the perfect formula.  Using indigenous yeasts these days in Bordeaux is fairly rare due to the  potential risk of bacterial spoilage as alcohol levels have risen, but for Lynch, with their own cultivated yeast they have found what is essentially a compromise between the two, an incredibly
reliable fermentation, even in warmer vintages, whilst the indigenous yeast adds a distinct character and complexity to the Lynch-Bages flavour profile. Pioneers of Pauillac The reputation of Chateau Lynch-Bages as an over-achieving Fifth Growth was initially built up by Jean-Charles’ great-grandfather (his namesake) who was a real pioneer in Bordeaux during the 1950s and 1960s. Jean-Charles describes him as a real risk-taker. He was the first winemaker in Bordeaux at that time to take the risk of picking later.  Jean-Charles explains "in those days most producers in the Medoc were too nervous of autumn rains to hold out", the result harvesting grapes with unripe, green tannins, that required years to soften. Alongside Jean Bouteiller of Chateau Pichon Baron and Edouard Gasqueton of Chateau Calon Ségur, Jean-Charles believes  "they single-handedly steered Bordeaux towards a richer, riper style."  The wines of Lynch-Bages became recognised for their opulent, fruity style. But this was not without forfeit. The family used to joke about his risk-taking. In 1964 with the onset of rain he refused to pick, preferring to wait until the bad weather passed, but it just rained and rained and the vintage was ruined. But it was the great vintages of 1953, 1955, 1959  and 1961 along with the lesser vintages of 1952 and 1957 that built the reputation for Chateau Lynch Bages, producing some of the finest wines of the vintage.  Jean-Charles was in fact the first Cazes to own Chateau Lynch-Bages - taking a huge gamble in buying the property. He was initially a lowly baker in the town of Pauillac and he bought the estate in the 1930s during the Great Depression, seeing an opportunity during the economic turmoil. He managed to accrue the money to secure the estate. With very little capital he had to sell every single bottle he produced, and this continued when his son Andre took over and is the reason why Lynch Bages has such a small back catalogue of vintages at the estate.  But the quality of the wines was evident even back in the early days.  During the 1950s and 1960s Alexis Lichine (then owner of Chateau Prieuré-Lichine) used to hold blind tastings with the trade in Bordeaux – typically made up of negociants, courtiers and merchants. In these tastings, Chateau Lynch-Bages famously performed well.  Jean-Charles talks fondly about how his great-grandfather would carry Alexis Lichine’s little book of blind-tasting results with him everywhere he went and used this to build up the reputation of the Chateau to merchants around the world. It seems Chateau Lynch-Bages has been over-achieving ever since and if the 2019 is anything to go by it continues to produce some of the best wines in the Medoc whilst retaining such a strong Pauillac quality. The recent purchase of Chateau Haut-Batailley Jean-Charles carried on in his ancestors’ risk-taking footsteps when he purchased Chateau Haut-Batailley in 2017 - a gamble that just a few years later seems to be paying off. The site is positioned in some of the finest terroir in Pauillac, neighbouring the vineyards of Chateau Latour, Chateau Pichon Lalande and Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste. Bordering Saint Julien the wine is much less structured than Lynch-Bages but more seductive and elegant. 2019 is undoubtedly the top wine they have made at the estate. 
 With Cabernet Sauvignon performing so well in 2019 they were able to put more than ever before in the blend, producing real clarity on the fruit and a real flair and energy on the finish. The wine is very different in style to Chateau Lynch-Bages, more of a cross between the seductive elements of Saint Julien and the graphite minerality of Pauillac. Both the second wine Verso and Chateau Haut-Batailley are fantastic additions to the Cazes portfolio.  Their third Chateau in the Medoc – Chateau Ormes de Pez in Saint Estephe, is arguably one of the best value wines in Bordeaux producing fantastic consistency in recent vintages and adept at handling the different tannin profiles you find in Saint Estephe. The wine is juicy, fleshy and more open-knit than the Pauillac wines but has a wonderful power and seriousness despite its roundedness. The quality and purity of the fruit typical of 2019 is also outstanding at Chateau Ormes de Pez. All three properties come highly recommended. Tasting notes Chateau Lynch-Bages 2019, Pauillac Gorgeous dense, focused aromas -dark black fruit both fresh and ripe, scented tea leaf, clove, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco, graphite. Stacked fine, close-knit tannins provide impressive detail, density and intensity on the palate. There is fantastic energy in this wine, pulsing as a
glycerol-rich fleshy concentration of fruit washes over a stony minerality. There is finesse and power and so much minerality. Stunning wine. 
Echo de Lynch-Bages 2019, Pauillac Lovely lifted tones to the wine - open dark berry fruit, sweet leather and scented clove as well as distinct graphite minerality and pencil lead. Succulent palate, juicy, fleshy glycerol rich and then the tannins start to define structure underneath a generous fruited full body. Integrated,

Chateau Haut-Batailley 2019, Pauillac Inky purple colour, Brooding dark / black fruit aromas. High-quality oak tones of scented clove, scented tea leaf and dark chocolate. Deep, beautifully ripe, delineated black fruit - cassis, blackberry, plum - puckering but refined, structural tannins. Earthy, savoury tones on the finish. Verso 2019 (Second Wine of Chateau Haut Batailley), Pauillac Dry spice, brooding nose. Soft, juicy blackberry coulis fruit - fleshy and generous. But there is also detail on the palate, the tannins have structure and layers. It doesn't have the refinement of tannins that the Haut-Batailley has but it's still serious. Refreshing acid and mineral freshness offset the generous fruit. Definitely over-achieving in 2019.

Chile is already well-known for producing top-quality Chardonnay and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Noir. But the wines tend to translate the intense solar energy synonymous with the region – producing fat, juicy, candied-fruit wines that lack the tension and minerality that the world’s very top examples exude. Baettig, however, is a notable exception – something that was highlighted by a recent vertical of the young estate’s first three vintages. The project came out of Francisco Baettig’s obsession with finding the right place for these finickity grapes in Chile. Following his own experiences growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay elsewhere, he knew what he had to avoid. He was adamant that he wouldn’t rely on irrigation, which leads to shallow root growth and therefore, in his view, less terroir expression. Secondly, he wanted better clonal material. Baettig went to the very best to source his vines – his Pinot Noir vines come from a top vine nursery in Gevrey-Chambertin. He also needed a cooler climate where he wouldn’t have to rely on thick canopy growth to protect the grapes from the sun – something which Baettig believes can lead to overt green flavours. High-intensity sunshine also leads to thicker-skinned berries, but – for Baettig – thinner-skinned berries produce fresher wines and more ethereal tannins, both elements he seeks in his Pinot Noir. A cooler climate would also mean lower alcohol and fresher fruit profiles. With all these components in mind, it took Francisco Baettig (of Errázuriz, Seña and Chadwick) and his business partner Carlos de Carlos two years to find what they felt was the best place for this project. Fortunately, for Baettig and Carlos, it was familiar territory. The remote Traiguén district of Malleco in Patagonia is close to where both Francisco and Carlos’s families are from. On the 38th parallel south, the region has enough annual rainfall to allow dry-farming, the solar intensity is 25% lower than in central Chile (allowing for lighter canopies and thinner skins), and the volcanic bedrock on top of clay soils is poor enough to produce naturally low-yielding, high-intensity fruit. They planted vines in 2012 and their first experimental vintage was 2016, making a tiny amount of wine for family and friends. After all that time and effort, it was only then that they found out if this place was as good as they hoped. “It was a nervous time,” chuckles Carlos. But the wines quickly brought a sense of relief – it was early days, but they could sense the promise and they could already feel the elusive tension present in the wines. It would be another four years before they launched their first commercial vintage in 2020. The wines were from 2019 – and it proved not the easiest vintage to launch a new wine. Baettig always wanted vintage variation, a region on the margins where the vintage leaves its stamp. But 2019 was a very hot vintage in central Chile and, though Baettig’s wines suffered a lot less in the cooler south, they were still affected. Now with three commercial vintages under their belt, the critics that have managed to taste the wines have been more than impressed. From the outset, their 2019 releases were met with much fanfare. James Suckling described them as “compelling… rare gems that make you contemplate Burgundy”. The 2020 Baettig Vino de Viñedos Los Parientes Pinot Noir was selected among the top 10 Chilean Pinot Noirs by a Decanter tasting panel and Joaquin Hidalgo from Vinous wrote that Baettig’s “ wines leave behind a trail of tension that is the stuff of drinkers’ dreams”. Francisco Baettig is no stranger to such accolades. He is already one of Chile’s most celebrated winemakers. Awarded Chile’s winemaker of the year in 2018 by Tim Atkin thanks to his work at Viña Errázuriz, he was instrumental in establishing the winery both in the fine wine world with Seña and Chadwick, but also amongst everyday drinkers with their consistent quality at lower price points. While Viña Errázuriz has become a hugely successful business with production amounting to over five million bottles every year, Baettig’s Traiguén project is tiny. Entirely self-funded, it is a real labour of love and production today is just 55,000 bottles per year.  These early years have not been without difficulty. Being able to dry-farm was important, but this came at a cost. While the rainfall should be sufficient to dry farm and protect them from potential drought in the early days, Baettig still chose to irrigate half the vineyard and left the rest without water. In the 10 years since they first planted, the unirrigated young vines suffered terribly and only the irrigated part of the vineyard grew strong. Once established these vines can now survive without irrigation. Since then, Baettig has replanted where the vines suffered most and irrigated the young vines before weening them off their water supply once established. It was a costly mistake that saw their production reduced by almost half. The quality of tannins in their Pinot Noir has also not been straightforward. Vine age, Baettig believes, is essential to create the quality tannins he is looking for. At the moment the Pinot Noir vines are too young to provide the texture he is ultimately seeking. He is using whole-bunch fermentation (up to 15%) to add texture, as well as more herbal spice aromas. He is also using new oak (at varying levels) to provide a bit more structure and backbone to the Pinot Noir. As the vines mature and the tannins become more present, he hopes he can taper his use of oak and whole-bunch to find the perfect balance. If the wines are already this good with such young vines, the future here is tantalising. The Chardonnay production has been more straightforward, and the wines are outstanding. The taut mineral expression, salinity and richly fruited body belie their modest price tags. Tasted blind you would never guess they were from Chile – but the early success of these wines is no doubt setting the benchmark for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Chile, as well as changing our expectations of the flavour profiles in the region.  Beattig and Carlos remain convinced about the region, and today the results speak for themselves. With so much going for it, you can’t help but feel this remote region will transform in the next few years as more and more vignerons realise its potential.

2019 Baettig, Vino de Viñedos, Los Parientes Chardonnay: The 2019 Los Parientes Chardonnay is starting to show the first signs of development with honeyed, citrus aromas and dried fruit tones. The palate remains clean and taut, very fresh with lime fruit flavours and structurally vertical in style. There is a contrasting mix of sweet, honeyed fruit and sharp acidity on the finish. 2020 Baettig, Vino de Viñedos, Los Parientes Chardonnay: Compared to the 2019, the ripe citrus fruit is better integrated with the acidity. A cool vintage for the region produced a wine with lovely contrasting lemon and orchard fruit flavours with more savoury, earthy, lightly smoky, mineral tones. The wine has great tautness, and the vibrancy really lends persistence to the palate. Again, it has a very vertical Chablis-esque style that is beautifully balanced and refreshing. 2021 Baettig, Vino de Viñedos, Los Parientes Chardonnay: The 2021 vintage in Traiguén is looking very special based on these early bottlings of Vino de Viñedos (the more premium Selección de Parcelas will be released next year). The nose is complex, with green herbal tones allied to chalky, briny, mineral notes. The palate retains that distinct vertical, Chablis-esque character, but also has a lovely, rich mid-palate. The tautness brings great energy to the wine. The wine has all you want in an acid-driven Chardonnay – varietal expression, verticality, salinity and a long, refreshing finish. This is exceptional value at under £20. 2019 Baettig, Selección de Parcelas, Los Primos Chardonnay: The Selección de Parcelas are the top bottlings from Baettig. The wine is barrel-fermented and aged for 14-15 months in oak. Compared to Los Parientes, at three years of age, the wine shows less development in bottle. The peppery spice from the oak along with the textural layering on the palate gives the wine a great mouthfeel. It is rich and concentrated, but still has plenty of tension and a refreshing mineral salinity on the finish. 2020 Baettig, Selección de Parcelas, Los Primos Chardonnay: The 2020 Los Primos Chardonnay is much more reductive on the nose than the 2019 tasted alongside. The mineral, struck-match reductive tone eases with air followed by lovely honey and delicate white-flower aromas – bringing beautiful lift to the wine. The textural quality is outstanding, and the oak ageing gives the wine a textural layering that is rich, concentrated and juicy. The orchard fruit and pepper spice from high-quality oak are all beautifully integrated. The refreshing saline notes come through on the finish and leave the palate feeling super fresh. 2019 Baettig, Vino de Viñedos, Los Parientes Pinot Noir: The 2019 Pinot Noir has just 7% whole-bunch fermentation, but it adds complexity, bringing lovely grilled, herbal, savoury notes to the wine as well as a bit of texture. The savoury tones gel nicely with earthy, wild strawberry and a touch of menthol. The inclusion of whole-bunch here is quite noticeable and dictates the character of the wine. 2020 Baettig, Vino de Viñedos, Los Parientes Pinot Noir: The 2020 is noticeably richer and full-bodied compared to the lighter-styled 2019. The whole-bunch, grilled, herbal, stemmy tones again add complexity but seem better integrated and balanced with the rich blackberry and plum fruit. Despite having a higher percentage of whole-bunch than in 2019, the vintage’s riper fruit and tannins are better able to balance out the additional complexity.  2021 Baettig, Vino de Viñedos, Los Parientes Pinot Noir: The 2021 Los Parientes is easily the best Pinot Noir Baettig has made at the estate so far and a real jump up in quality from 2020 and 2019. The nose has great fruit clarity with rich, ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit aromas. The grilled herbal notes sit beautifully in the background, adding depth and complexity to the aromas. The whole-bunch is also better integrated on the palate, bringing lots of texture, matched by vibrant acidity and saline notes on the finish. It reminds me of a village Morey-Saint-Denis from a ripe vintage in its fruit profile with earthy, blackberry coulis fruit. The wine certainly has a more European/cool-climate edge to it. 2019 Baettig, Selección de Parcelas, Los Primos Pinot Noir: Like the 2019 Selección de Parcelas Chardonnay, the 2019 Pinot Noir has handled the warmer vintage conditions much better, but the warmth of the vintage shines through in the sweet, candy-like blackberry fruit. This is more New World in style – full-bodied, rich, ripe and full of juicy fruit. The herbal tones from a proportion of whole-bunch comes through nicely on the finish, adding savoury complexity. 2020 Baettig, Selección de Parcelas, Los Primos Pinot Noir: The 2020 has a very dark, deep purple colour and some charry, smoky and peppery tones from high-quality oak that is well balanced by fresher, grilled, herbal notes from the portion of whole-bunch fermentation. Francisco Baettig’s new project in Chile’s volcanic south is wowing critics. Tasting through the first three vintages reveals a fascinating evolution. We caught up with founders Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos to find out more

Getting to taste a vertical of any one wine is undoubtedly the best way to understand it. It provides that rare opportunity to see how well each wine has evolved, how each vintage was shaped by its growing season and whether the wine’s character and personality remains a constant throughout. But these 14 vintages of Colore – spanning the first 20 years of its existence – are as much about Bibi Graetz’s own evolution as that of the wines.  Over the last two decades there has been a dramatic change in the production of Colore – one that mirrors Bibi Graetz’s journey of discovery in winemaking and viticulture, having started as a complete amateur. From 2000 to the most recent vintage (2018), the wine has completely transformed in both where it is grown and how it is made.   As Graetz says, the concept behind Colore never changed. “I wanted to make the best wine possible. All that changed was how! In the past I thought the best grapes had to be the most powerful. We were green harvesting in the vineyard – getting the production as low as possible, we were bleeding off juice in the winery to increase the concentration, we were using new oak to bring more body, intensity, power.”  In complete contrast, today there is no green harvest in the vineyards: Graetz doesn’t even hedge the vines, preferring them to find their own balance. There is no more bleeding off, with Graetz believing a natural balance is more important than a higher level of tannins. There is no new oak anymore – just old barrels, large foudres of various sizes and cement tanks for maturing the wine. At the beginning, Graetz worked with a consultant, but as he took on more of the winemaking himself (from 2004 onwards), each experiment saw the wine style and production change, based on his own experiments and intuition.  One thing has remained consistent throughout: the unusual method of fermenting the wine in barrel. With Graetz’s commitment that Colore should be made with only the very best grapes, quantities were so small, a normal fermenting vat would not work. “My winemaker at the time came up with the idea – he said simply open up a barrique and ferment the grapes in them. Winemakers in California and South Africa were already doing these micro cuvées very successfully and I thought why not?” Graetz feels this is key to Colore’s style – exposing the must to lots of oxygen, integrating the oak with the tannins better, and with the smaller size leading to a different temperature range during fermentation.   While most of these changes were gradual, perhaps the biggest turning point for Colore came in 2008 with the discovery of the Lamole vineyard. Graetz’s focus has always been on sourcing grapes from Tuscany’s oldest vines and this vineyard – sitting at some of the highest altitudes in Chianti Classico – was to have a profound effect on the wine. The fruit from this special site rapidly started to dominate the blend. Prior to 2008, Colore sat alongside Bibi Graetz’s other prestige cuvée Testamatta – two wines of equal status exploring two different concepts, with Testamatta pure Sangiovese and Colore, a blend of the three red Tuscan grapes (Sangiovese, Colorino and Canaiolo). Graetz knew there was something special about the 2008 vintage, particularly with the introduction of the Lamole vineyard. Graetz decided to choose only the very best barrels for Colore, making production very limited and pitching it above Testamatta. The first vintage of the new Colore, 2008, sent the critics wild – and the price too.  For Graetz personally, the 2009 vintage marks another significant change, with a shift from power to elegance. The 2009 vintage was very difficult in Tuscany – making it difficult to get any concentration, something that Graetz was originally worried about. “But when I made the wine, the response was one of universal approval. It was lighter, more elegant and I saw the value in that.”   Tasting through vintages back to 2000, the 2008 remains the stand-out wine of the line-up and, whatever changes happened in the winery, you feel the 2009 difficult vintage conditions didn’t capture the magic and personality that the 2008 exudes. This is just one pair in the line-up that proves that vintage remains at the heart of a wine, no matter the changes in the wine cellar. The 2010 for example tells of its low yields, needing time to fully unfurl. Similarly, the more difficult 2011 and ’12 vintages show much more maturity than the ’10, ’08 or ’06.   The modern vintages become much more consistent – and, although still very youthful, you feel Graetz found his feet in terms of what he wants Colore to be. There is both elegance and natural power in these beautiful renditions of Sangiovese. The switch in style from the early vintages is remarkable. The 2005, 2004 and 2003 in particular are much more “international” in style. They are perfectly well-made monoliths, but don’t exude the personality of more recent vintages.   While today the 2008 remains the finest expression to date, you can’t help feel that many of the younger vintages could – with maturity – match it. As the vintages progress, Colore becomes ever more elegant, reflecting Graetz’s changing philosophy. Graetz’s evolution as a winemaker shines through in these wines, but the transparency that comes with that evolution – allowing the fruit to speak more clearly of a time and a place – that is the narrative. The resulting wines have as much personality as their maker.  Tasting through two decades of Bibi Graetz’s Colore  2018 Colore: The 2018 has a translucent ruby colour and a light floral perfume with pure, very compacted aromas of pot-pourri and red aniseed. Medium bodied, the tannins are fully ripe, resolved and beautifully silky for Sangiovese, bringing an effortless structure to the wine. Warming, ripe black cherry fruit fills the palate and sustains a long finish. Drink 2028-2045.  2016 Colore: With two years more in bottle, the 2016 is much more expressive than the 2018. Dried tobacco, rose talc, geranium, even a touch of cumin brings lovely floral complexity to the aromas. The tannins are that much more integrated and meld around a good core of fruit – with solid black cherry fruit flavours and dark chocolate notes. There is an overriding florality to the wine, adding further complexity to this beautifully balanced rendition. Drink 2026-2041.  2015 Colore: The 2015 is less expressive today than the 2016, which is somewhat surprising since you would expect the 2015 to be more open. There are darker elements to this wine, dominated for now by fragrant aniseed and dark chocolate aromas. The palate is silky soft with lovely, resolved tannins. It has compacted, concentrated fruit with an impressive density to the mid palate. Again, a solid core of fruit at its centre, melded with layered, detailed tannins. This will blossom but needs time. Drink 2025-2040.  2012 Colore: There is a huge difference contrasting 2012 and 2015, with three more years in bottle, heightened no doubt by the cooler vintage conditions. The wine in itself is in a lovely stage of evolution, with tertiary, savoury, maturing elements intertwined with more primary, floral and black plum fruit. The tannins are noticeably softer on the palate, less overtly present in dictating the wine’s character. This is both fresh and funky and with a touch of tertiary leather too. This is drinking beautifully now. Drink 2021-2028.  2011 Colore: Similar to the 2012 there are some noticeable maturing elements to the wine, providing a lovely complexity both to its aromas and palate. While the fruit character is less plush, the wine has a fantastic vibrancy and firmer acidity. Earthy, savoury tones and a touch of bloody iodine gives good typicity to the region, the variety and the vintage. Drink 2021-2030.  2010 Colore: The 2010 is incredibly youthful compared to the 2011 and 2012, showing how arguably vintage conditions play a significant role in the wine’s ageing ability. Yields were significantly down in 2010 and this shows in this dense rendition. The wine, similarly to 2015 is a little closed right now offering hints of iodine and earthy, black cherry fruit. Tasting the next day, the wine is much more open, the tannins are incredibly concentrated and there is amazing acidity too. The fruit on the palate is very pure. This is powerful and will no doubt mellow beautifully with age. Drink 2025-2035.  2009 Colore: Very developed on the nose, so much so that this bottle may not have been in perfect condition. The wine comes across a little oxidised with black liquorice aromas and light acetate notes. Fruit is ripe and slightly raisined, it seems almost later picked than other vintages and certainly more developed than older vintages.  2008 Colore: The wine of the line-up. This is an exceptional wine, firmly in its drinking window but with bracing acidity that offers plenty of life ahead. There are lovely tertiary notes, while also remaining fragrant and clean on the nose. The palate is very fresh with fine, silk-coated tannins providing a lovely breadth to the palate. This is so elegant and yet so rich; very Italian in style with dried floral lift, liquorice spice and bountiful black cherry fruit. Drink 2021-2030.  2007 Colore: The 2007 has a very complex nose with dry spice, aniseed, cured meats and a touch of blue cheese. This funkiness dissipates with air becoming more integrated and all the better for it. The palate remains very silky with maturing cherry fruit, pickling juices and figs. The acidity and tannins are totally melded to the fruit, providing an excellent textural quality to the wine, with a spicy chili finish. Drink 2021-2025.  2006 Colore: This wine shows very little sign of age, maturing at a snail’s pace. It retains a lovely Italian identity with vibrant acidity, cherry fruit and liquorice notes. There is almost no tertiary character to this wine, possibly another nod to the exceptional vintage conditions? The fruit is very concentrated, clean, and surprisingly youthful in character. I would love to explore this again with more maturity. Drink 2022-2030.  2005 Colore: Still quite youthful but lacks the perfumed fruit of younger vintages. Very ripe fruit with additional dry oak spices on the nose. The wine has a fine texture, layered tannins and more oak influence on the palate. Not so obviously Italian and more “international” in its style. Drink 2021-2026.  2004 Colore: Similar to the 2005, the wine has a lot of ripeness and intensity as well as spicy notes. More expressive than the 2005, there is a floral lift too. Tannins are a little less pleasing – slightly blocky in character and the fruit is quite ripe, bordering on raisined in character. The dried fruits developing possibly from age, although lacks the personality of some of the younger vintages. Drink 2021-2025.  2003 Colore: The 2003 was perhaps the most disappointing wine in the line-up and quite closed down. Graetz thought the wine was slightly oxidized. There was bitter chocolate on the nose, but the tannins were silky and beautifully melded and the acidity is well balanced. Despite this, the 2003 falls into a monolithic character similar to the 2004 and 2005, lacking a bit of personality. Drink 2021-2025.  2000 Colore: Certainly less monolithic than the ‘03, ‘04 and ‘05 and much more developed. This is fully mature, with pure tertiary characters on the nose – smoky, undergrowth and touch of funky Brett notes. This has lost much of its primary fruit and is on the decline. A story in Sangiovese: two decades of Colore

William Kelley, Wine Advocate First out of the gate is William Kelley, who has taken over covering Bordeaux from Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW at Wine Advocate. He was keen to emphasise his methodology – having spent three weeks visiting over 250 châteaux throughout Bordeaux, tasting many of the wines on multiple occasions.  Kelley acknowledges the many challenges the vignerons faced in 2021 and while he admits 2021 is not a great vintage overall for the reds, it has “produced several genuinely great wines, as well as many good to excellent wines that will deliver immense pleasure”. He compares the lower levels of alcohol and concentration to vintages from the 1990s, while at the same time noting how the wines have greatly benefited from today’s “agronomic progress and technical savoir faire”: “Were the 2021s transposed to the decade of the 1990s,” he says, “they would be considered the product of a superb vintage.” The cooler growing season produced “a great vintage for whites” that he believes are the finest set of dry whites since 2017. Kelley’s highlights: Haut-Brion, Margaux, Ausone, Lafleur, Cheval Blanc, Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Léoville Las Cases, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Laroque, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc and Palmer Read William Kelley’s full report on the vintage on the Wine Advocate Antonio Galloni, Vinous First up from team Vinous is Antonio Galloni who clearly loved the best wines of 2021, which he declares “a striking combination of old-school classicism and modern-day precision”. “The top properties turned out gorgeous, classically built wines that will absolutely thrill readers who appreciate freshness and energy,” he says. Of course, he cautions that quality isn’t consistent and selection is essential in the vintage.  He notes that it was those who could afford the significant labour required who excelled, while producers also benefitted from the experience of 2017 (for frost) and 2018 (for mildew), and better equipment and know-how in the winery is also a factor. He highlights that élevage will be key for the wines. Galloni feels it’s neither firmly a Left or Right Bank vintage, although finds a little more consistency on the Left, but perhaps greater highs on the Right. He’s one of several to note that the best white wines are “absolutely riveting” – combining the richness of a warm vintage with the freshness of a cooler year, with tiny yields of “compelling” sweets as well.  Galloni’s highlights: Beau-Séjour Bécot, Calon Ségur, Cheval Blanc, La Conseillante, L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne, Ducru-Beaucaillou, La Gaffelière, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Les Perrières, Pichon Comtesse, Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, Vieux Château Certan, Phélan Ségur, Léoville-Poyferré and Palmer Read Antonio Galloni’s full report on Vinous Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux This is the first vintage for ex-Decanter critic and Bordeaux resident Jane Anson publishing on her own site, Inside Bordeaux. She highlights the variable success overall of the 2021 vintage, but notes that there remain a good number of estates that have produced excellent wines. From an appellation point of view, she feels Saint-Estèphe was “a high point”, noting the drier August helped with the “natural concentration” found in the wines there. She also notes that Saint-Emilion made “some of the best wines of the vintage”, with the clay limestone soils found in certain spots “probably the most well-placed terroir overall to resist the challenges of the year”. Her top wines however spread across all regions of Bordeaux. Ch. Haut-Brion Blanc garnered the highest score of 98 points, while Ch. La Mission Haut-Brion from Pessac-Léognan, Figeac from Saint-Emilion, Lafleur from Pomerol and Lafite from Pauillac all scored 97 points along with Ch. Margaux’s Pavillon Blanc. Anson has given earlier drinking windows than a normal year because, despite the high levels of tannins, she notes “the structure is delicate”, advising that “you need to start drinking these while the fruits are at their best”. Anson’s highlights: Haut-Brion Blanc, La Mission Haut-Brion, Pavillon Blanc du Ch. Margaux, Lafleur, Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Figeac Read Jane Anson’s full report on Inside Bordeaux Neal Martin, Vinous In his detailed report, Neal Martin runs through a “complex and turbulent growing season” before laying out the consequences in the winery. He emphasises how stressful the season was for the region’s vignerons. Overall he feels it’s “a welcome return to a classic style of Bordeaux” – with lower alcohol and ripeness levels, with the finest wines that “transcend expectations”.  That said he notes that they are a result of their challenging growing season, and it’s not a year that will “rank with the greats”; he didn’t find perfection. He did, however, find wines that are “remarkable” given the year – “testament to the effort and skill of winemakers and vineyard teams”. He highlights “a bevy of outstanding dry whites” and that quality amongst the reds varies significantly between estates. While not declaring a drinking window firmly, he suggests the best “may well reward patience” – and will be “fascinating to watch evolve in bottle”. In distinct contrast to the warm years that preceded it, 2021 is, he says, “bejewelled with wines that will offer immense pleasure”. Martin’s highlights: Lafleur, Haut-Brion Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Cheval Blanc, La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, Lafaurie-Peyraguey, De Fargues, Lafite-Rothschild, Pétrus, Calon-Ségur, Haut-Brion, Vieux Château Certan, La Conseillante, Figeac Read Neal Martin’s full report on Vinous James Suckling After tasting the last 39 vintages in Bordeaux, James Suckling struggles to find comparable year to 2021, such are the anomalies of the vintage. He is struck by the “bright and fresh acidity and relatively low alcohol of the wines”, making them easy to read, while also having an “immediate drinkability”. While he notes 2021 is a very heterogeneous vintage – and has produced significantly less structured wines than 2018, 2109 and 2020 – there are some “delicious”, “acid-driven” reds. He has found more consistency in the whites and proposes, “the sweet wines of Bordeaux may be the miracle of the harvest”. Made in miniscule quantities, what little there is is sure to outlive the dry wines that he proposes will drink well young. His top-rated pick is the Sauternes estate of Ch. Lafaurie-Peyraguey, awarding the only potential 100-point score of the vintage. His other top wines all come from Pomerol and are the blue-chip stalwarts of Pétrus, Le Pin and Lafleur, all scoring 98-99 points. The only other wine awarded 98-99 is Domaine de Chevalier’s white. Suckling’s highlights: Lafleur, Le Pin, Pétrus, Laufaurie-Peyraguey, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc Read James Suckling’s full report on the vintage on his website Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW's 2021 Bordeaux report is the first for her new publication, The Wine Independent, launched earlier this year. Overall, she is more scathing than other critics, with some noticeably low scores across a much larger range (something that is intended to be a point of difference for The Wine Independent).She found the 2021 wines to be “variable”, with “dilution” and “under-ripeness omnipresent” but at their best are “refreshing, elegant, savory wines with lower alcohol and light to medium-bodied" with "well-sustained mid-palates and finishes”. She notes that it's a significant shift from recent vintages, which “may well be just what you are seeking. Or not.” She suggests drinkers who prefer lower-alcohol wines of vintages past may enjoy the lighter style of the vintage. Most notably, she believes the wines’ ability to age is lower than recent vintages and that most wines will reach their peak within 10 years. Where quality is at its highest, she believes low yields played a big factor in 2021. When drawing comparisons to similarly styled vintages, she likens the 2021 wines to 2013.  Looking at her top-rated wines, there seems to be a preference to the Right Bank with Ch. Ausone, Ch. Cheval Blanc and Ch. Lafleur all in her top band of scores (95-97 points). The white wines of Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte, Ch. Haut-Brion and Domaine de Chevalier also score highly, although she remarks that there were only a handful of whites in 2021 that really wowed her. Ch. Margaux is the highest scoring Left Bank red wine (also awarded 95-97 points). Perrotti-Brown’s highlights: Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion Blanc, Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, Margaux, Lafleur Read Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW's full report on The Wine Independent Georgie Hindle, Decanter This is Georgie Hindle’s first vintage as Decanter’s official Bordeaux correspondent, after Jane Anson vacated the role last year. Overall, Hindle classified 2021 as a 3.5/5 vintage for the red wines and 4.5/5 for the dry whites and sweets. The challenging growing season, she notes, produced red wines of variable, uneven quality, while the whites and sweet wines were better suited to the cooler conditions. Having said that, she notes there were some “incredible wines produced in 2021”. Her favourite wine from the Médoc was Ch. Lafite-Rothschild. She also praised Ch. Haut-Brion from Pessac-Léognan, Ch. Figeac from Saint-Emilion and Ch. Lafleur from Pomerol. Hindle awarded her highest scores of the vintage (97 points) to the white wines of Ch. Haut-Brion and Ch. Margaux’s Pavillon Blanc. She notes that the top red wines offer a “cool classicism” and are “refined, elegant and low alcohol”. While very different in character to recent modern vintages, she says the best red wines are “supremely balanced and pleasurable”. She adds that they are “characterful with crisp red fruits, refreshing acidities and silky, well-integrated tannins as well as expressive of terroir”. Georgie Hindle’s highlights: Ch. Haut-Brion, Ch. Margaux Read Georgie Hindle’s full report on Decanter's website Jeb Dunnuck Jeb Dunnuck’s 2021 Bordeaux en primeur report remains upbeat for the top wines of the vintage – declaring it a “challenging but good” vintage, although (besides 2013) he feels it “checks in substantially behind recent vintages”.  For Dunnuck, the top wines are elegant and “shine for their purity and finesse more than their power and richness”. He notes that the 2021s are “incredibly transparent and convey their terroir and winemaking clearly” – for better or worse. For Dunnuck, the Graves reds have a better mid-palate and a touch more density than other appellations, although he doesn’t feel one region outshone another. While he heard many winemakers compare the vintage to classic cooler vintages of the 1980s and ’90s, he finds these comparisons unhelpful, considering the changes in viticulture and winemaking over the last 20 years. While he struggles to find any modern comparison for the reds, he believes the vintage has similar weight and concentration to the likes of 2004, 2007, 2014 and 2017. Dunnuck declares it an excellent vintage for white and sweet wines and his top-rated wines include Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc,Domaine de Chevalier Blancand Pavillon Blanc du Ch. Margaux. Dunnuck’s highlights: Haut-Brion, Pavie, Margaux, Lafleur, Latour, Ducru Beaucaillou, Figeac, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Pavillon Blanc du Ch. Margaux and Les Champs Libres Read Jeb Dunnuck’s full report on the vintage Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Inside Jeff Leve’s Bordeaux report for The Wine Cellar Insider is largely positive – with the caveat that it is not a vintage for everyone. Lovers of classic Bordeaux (“classic in a good way”), he believes however, will find plenty to enjoy in the wines. He found many of the red wines to exude “freshness, salinity, crisp red fruits, refreshing acidities, and low alcohol levels”. While he found some of the wines “trail off in the middle” and had “dusty tannins”, the wines generally had great attack, and were not underripe but “crisp, fresh and often savoury”. He found 2021 to be a special vintage for white wines, describing them as “extraordinary”, with a “gorgeous sense of purity as well as crisp, biting acidities”. His top four wines were all whites, with Haut-Brion Blanc receiving his only 100-point score. Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc and la Mission Haut-Brion Blanc were awarded 98 points. His top reds were Ch. Ausone, Lafite, Lafleur, Latour, Cheval Blanc and Margaux, all receiving 97 points. Wines sold en primeur will be released from the producer after bottling, typically 18 months after the so-called campaign ends. Upon arrival your wine will be stored at Vinfolio in our temperature-controlled warehouse until you decide to take delivery.

When a wine is on "pre-arrival", it means that we have a confirmed order on the bottles from our supplier and we are simply waiting for the winery or distributor to ship the wine to us. The delivery timeframe for pre-arrival wines varies significantly, depending on where the wine is coming from.
