Tasted blind. Pale russet. Volatile nose with some old cheese and tea leaves. Some dried strawberry and gingerbread on the palate, with an impressive elegance. Length is actually very good, giving a peacock’s tail of chocolate, sweet spice and dried strawberry, but the nose is looking a little tired. (TJ)

The 1966 Sandeman Vintage Porto has a potent menthol/peppermint-scented nose that lends it a medicinal allure, although it lacks the sophistication of the 1963. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a gentle and lilting Sandeman that perhaps lacks the weight and depth on the finish of a top tier 1966. It remains nicely balanced and does not want to make too much of a fuss, though the spearmint note on the aftertaste is just a little too pronounced for my liking. Drink now-2025.

Pale, delicate rose red. Distinctly medicinal, even a little cheesy, on the nose. The fruit has gone a little hard and there’s a certain metallic quality to this. More of a curiosity than an out-and-out pleasure. Relatively light bodied. Bitter chocolate on the finish but not that intense. (JR)
