This popular blend of 92 per cent Sangiovese and eight per cent Cabernet Sauvignon has a rather varnishy nose followed by a full, savoury palate with true Sangiovese flavours. The oak is a little too obvious on the finish. Horrible wine to be asked to taste blind. (JR)

The 1998 Firebreak (92% Sangiovese and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a light effort revealing jagged acidity as well as a compressed texture. Notions of cherry syrup and strawberry jam provide pleasant aromas, but acid compresses the wine. While it is elegant, it lacks substance and intensity.

Deep red. Redcurrant, tobacco and dried rose on the nose. High-pitched and penetrating, with sweetness leavened by firm acids. Floral and dark chocolate nuances in the middle palate and on the aftertaste. Tannins are rather fine. This really benefitted from the longer time in barrel. Should make a very flexible dinner-table wine.
