Domaine Dugat-Py's 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is extraordinary, wafting from the glass with a ravishingly pure bouquet of peony, rose petal, red cherries and cassis, with only subtle hints of the savory complexity to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, its tannins exquisitely fine and its concentration and length immense, but what really defines this Lavaux Saint-Jacques is its bright acid line and sappy energy, which carry through the fine-grained, stony finish. This 2015 evokes the domaine's superb 2005 rendition, but in 2015 extraction is more controlled and the fruit still more vibrant. It's a timeless Lavaux Saint-Jacques that eclipses many grands crus—and one that will merit a dozen years of patience.

Saturated dark red. Enveloping perfume of cherry, raspberry and espresso. Offers compelling plushness and depth, conveying a tactile, three-dimensional quality to its flavors of dark berries, coffee, mocha and saline minerality. Wonderfully aromatic in the middle palate for such a plush, ripe wine. This utterly seamless wine finishes with silky tannins and a sexy Gevrey perfume of moch and underbrush, as well as the sappy energy to evolve slowly. I can see this going truffley in 10 or 12 years--and it may have the balance, as well as the refined tannins, to avoid shutting down along the way.

(80% vendange entier ; 100% new oak): Distinctly reduced nose combines boysenberry and a musky meaty element. Broad, supple and sweet; distinctly purple fruit in style but compellingly pliant and round. Finishes very long and ripely tannic, with late notes of boysenberry and licorice. This seamless 2015 boasts serious breadth, harmonious acidity and superb fruit intensity. (Dugat's Gevrey-Chambertin Fonteny and Gevrey-Chambertin Corbeaux had been racked very late, after late malos, and were in a rather fatigued state; I will try to follow up on these wines from bottle next year.)

(vinified with 70% stems). Reduction. Otherwise there is a palpable sense of underlying tension to the muscular, intense and chiseled broad-shouldered flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the wonderfully persistent finale where a touch of minerality helps to add lift. This too is seriously good. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com
