Score 88/100 · Drink 2017-2022, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2017

The 1981 Sassicaia shows its age with a subdued aromatic performance and tertiary aromas that are dusty and mineral-like in character. The wine may not have a very long life ahead, but neither is it in a bad place today. This remains an enjoyable effort that still resists within a reasonable frame along its drinking timeline. Dried fruit and cured tobacco leaf add more substance to the bouquet. This is an inward looking and introspective edition of the usually boisterous Sassicaia. Give it some time to find balance in the glass and the wine is well worth the extra contemplation and attention.

Good intensity of ruby. Some quite brutal richness. Bloody, full, very, very concentrated, but not very charming or sweet. Quite furry tannins. Quite brutal and very youthful. Dry year. (JR)
