I doubt I had the very best bottle of the 1983 Riesling Clos Ste Hune, but since there was no alternative available, readers should take this note with caution. The wine has a clear and intense bouquet of stewed fruits and delicate spicy notes. Very firm and mineral on the palate, this is a very tight and closed wine with intensity and power, yet it seems all too serious and lacks the generosity and free and joyful spirit that the warm and sunny 1983 vintage can offer, especially on the finish. This little defect is most probably caused by cork taint. Tasted at the Auberge de l'Ill in November 2024.

This is fading a bit, but is still surprisingly tense and linear on the compact, full-bodied palate. The caramelized apple character is something I associate with full maturity or slight over-maturity. Drink up.
A bold, rich vintage that is now a little old with butterscotch flavours. It’s certainly fuller-bodied. (JR)
The 1983 Riesling Clos Ste. Hune shows the wilder, more animal side of Riesling. Game, smoke, petrol, licorice, herbs and dried flowers all race out of the glass. Disjointed and burly almost to the point of being aggressive, the 1983 makes its case with pure power more than finesse. I don't see this imposing Riesling ever being especially refined, but it certainly does not lack personality.
