Score 92-94/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2016

Bright medium ruby Savory aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, liquid smoke and animal fur. At once silky and bracing, displaying excellent definition and lift to its flavors of blueberry, blackberry and licorice. Finishes juicy and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins and lively blackberry and violet notes. This really spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate and glistens on the aftertaste.

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux has a rich, quite opulent bouquet with small black fruit, boysenberry jam and crème de cassis, the new oak in control at the moment. The palate is dense on the entry, grippy in the mouth with layers of toasty black fruit that I feel slightly dry the finish. Hopefully it will gain just a little more flesh.

67% whole bunch, 100% new oak. Great breadth with exciting spicy minerality. Sweet and spicy with an undertow of meat extract. Hint of treacle. Very dramatic and perhaps not the most refreshing? But very dramatic indeed. Just a little drying on the end. (JR)
