Just mid ruby, with orange tinge. Initially sweet and a little bit chalky. Not too hard work on the nose. Accessible and easy to enjoy. Perhaps not entirely on a Barolo level, but appetising, nevertheless. Nose more Barolo rather than the palate. Slightly astringent tannin. (WS)

The 2008 Barolo is a striking wine at this level. Sweet red fruit, flowers, mint and spices are some of the nuances that emerge from the glass. This is one of the few 2008s that has lovely mid-palate presence to balance the focused, vibrant quality of the year. Layers of expressive, perfumed fruit linger on the finish. The Barolo was made from a number of vineyards, including parcels in Rocche-Mariondino, Vignane, Vignolo, Terlo, Bricco Manescoto, Albarella and Plicotti. How's that for an all-star collection of sites? The 2008 is flat-out beautiful.

There is always something new happening at Scavino, where Enrico Scavino, along with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, continues to push the envelope. This year the Scavinos have a new Riserva they are issuing to mark the 30th Anniversary of Bric del Fiasc, first released in 1978. The 2009s, 2010s and 2011s I tasted point to an estate working at a very high level of overall quality and consistency. Readers who want to learn more about the estate may want to take a look at my video interview with Elisa Scavino. Importer: Banville & Jones Wine Merchants, New York, NY; tel. (204) 294-4899

Moderately saturated bright red. Rather Burgundian perfume of cherry liqueur, raspberry, strawberry, mint and flowers. Suave and soft, with an almost candied quality to the perfumed red fruit and mint flavors. The combination of silkiness and juiciness makes for a classy basic Barolo. Finishes with noteworthy length and perfume.
