The 2014 Les Champs Libres clearly has more complexity and drive on the nose than the 2013 with orange pith, candle wax and subtle lanolin scents unfurling in the glass. The palate is well balanced with more presence than the preceding vintage. Slightly waxy in texture with the lightest of reductions, this has a bit of bite on the grilled walnut- and dried honey-tinged finish. This is maturing with aplomb and worth seeking out. Tasted from ex-château magnum at Kate & Kon's 40-Year vertical in Austria.

The 2014 Les Champs Libre Blanc has an attractive bouquet with lemon sherbet, orange blossom and grapefruit scents all very well defined. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated new oak lending a creamy sheen, moderate acidity, gaining depth towards the light honeyed, stem ginger tinged finish. Very fine (and the winner of the flight, beating many Pessac-Léognan Blancs.) Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Stinky Sauvignon Blanc nose. Tight and fresh. Very leafy and vegy. Perhaps not as distinctively Pessac-Léognan as some, but a well made wine. Creamy texture and obviously (but not too obviously) oaked. Very cool, long finish. Good for the Guinaudeau family to have created something from nothing. Favourite of the group! (JR)
