Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Intensely perfumed sweet red and dark fruit rises up from the glass like a cloud. A little lifted. The oak has been almost completely absorbed. Still has marked acidity and rich, but not stewed fruit. A little warm on the finish and a little hard, but with a crunchy, sweet fruit finish. (WS)

Healthy deep red. Sour cherry on the nose, lifted by an exotic lilac quality. Silky and elegant, with juicy, harmonious acidity giving the intense red cherry and floral flavors excellent penetration. Quite youthfully imploded today and impressively high-pitched for the year. The fine-grained tannins are firm without coming off as hard or dry. This structured young Barolo will need patience.

The 2007 Barolo Via Nuova shows more verve and freshness than the Cannubi, which is not entirely surprising, given the sheltered exposure of this site. A lively vein of minerality supports gorgeous dark berries, flowers, sweet spices, sage and rosemary. Over time, the wine's inner perfume blossoms in the glass, the tannins soften a touch and the radiant fruit becomes even more expressive. The generous quality of the vintage as expressed by this wine is truly striking. The Via Nuova is delicious today, and while it is far from a crime to open a bottle today, it will be even better in a few years.

Her 2007s were beautiful when I tasted them from barrel last year, and they are equally gorgeous now that they are in bottle. Boschis has gradually lowered the percentage of new oak in her wines, which is allowing the fruit to come through with notable elegance and transparency.
