Good bright, dark red. Red cherry, raspberry and sweet oak scents on the nose. Rich, sweet and pliant; a step up in creaminess and volume from the regular village offering. Lovely high-toned red fruit and floral flavors linger nicely on the broad, long finish, which features sweet, suave tannins. This was aged in 70% new oak but wears it lights.

As it often is, the 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is one of the highlights in the range. Silky, layered and polished to the core, the 2011 is open and inviting today. Sweet floral and savory notes flesh out on the resonant finish. In 2011, the Vieilles Vignes is all about silk and finesse.

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes was aged in 60% new oak. Here, I feel the wood is a little pronounced compared to the other crus. The palate has a thick entry with rounded, quite bold tannins. There is good substance here but at the moment I prefer the finesse displayed by the younger vines. This is a square-jawed Gevrey-Chambertin, where I am seeking a little more finesse. Drink 2015-2025. Importer: Martine's Wines, Novato, CA; tel. A hint of oak on the nose. Lots of energy. Pruney fruit. Very sweet. Perhaps lacks a bit of drive. (JR)
