The Davis vineyard is located in the heart of Coonawarra and was planted in 1957 (making it the estate's second oldest vineyard). The last single-vineyard bottling was in 2008. On the nose, the 2019 Davis Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is scented of shortcrust pastry, clove bud, aniseed, cassis, raspberry and caper brine. In the mouth, it is the very picture of balanced/ethereal; it doesn't put forth a rambunctious display of fruit in the least. Rather, it offers a subdued, restrained ebb and flow of salted raspberry and licorice, woody garden herbs and brine. This is a lovely wine, quiet.

Menthol and lively black fruits on the nose. The palate has cassis, ripe dark fruits, leather and sandalwood on the finish. The oak is still integrating but there’s bags of fruit here to see this through. Textbook stuff, slight ferrous note and needs a year or two. (AC)

Tasted in a mini sample 'packet'. Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certified (vineyard and winery). 14 months in 31% new, 61% seasoned French hogsheads, with some seasoned barriques and vats.  Ineffably elegant. Low-timbred, graceful dark fruit presses a quiet vibrato into tobacco-leaf-scented tannins. Ripe and wholly Coonawarra in its expression of fruit, moving to the sinuosity of loose, long-limbed tannins with a certain suave but coy insouciance. But serious... This will age beautifully. (TC)

Opaque ruby. Expansive aromas of dark fruit preserves, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke are complemented by a hint of vanilla that builds as the wine stretches out. Broad and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated black and blue fruit, spicecake and cola flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. The smoke and vanilla notes recur on an impressively long, seamless finish that features supple, even tannins and a subtle floral pastille nuance. One-third new French oak.
