"Starting with the 1988 vintage, we started a new life," says Masi's Sandro Boscaini. "This marks the biggest of the wines. It's almost like a Californian wine made in northern Italy." The Masi 1988 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico maintains a pretty garnet color with darks hues of glossy chestnut shell. The wine offers an immediately salty side with a smoked barbecue character that we have not seen in the other wines presented thus far in this historic retrospective. Dark mineral notes intermingle with grilled rosemary, pitted prune and campfire ember. This is a plush and texturally rich Amarone.
