Score 93/100 · Drink 2023-2030, Angus Hughson, Vinous, Apr 2023

This charming and elegant 1982 Shiraz Hill of Grace has retained impressive balance at over 40 years of age. It remains bright, graceful and subtle with baked raspberry and baked earth aromas, plus an intriguing touch of potpourri. Well composed and mid-weight, a moreish satiny texture provides impressive drinkability before it cruises through to a long silky finish. Drinking beautifully now but will hold for a little while longer.

Considered a classic vintage: mild growing season, heatwave before vintage, above-average yields . Looks quite developed in the glass but floods the nostrils and mouth with lovely aromas of wild berries and warm earth; initially has a beautiful flow of tannins, but then shows signs of beginning to dry out on the finish. Not as great as other bottles I’ve tasted. (MA)

Medium brick in color, the 1982 Hill of Grace opens with aromas of game, dried cherries, plum preserves, sauteed herbs and dried rose buds. Medium-bodied with balanced, crisp acid and low to medium levels of chewy tannins, it is a little lacking in mid-palate before finishing with good length. It is mature. Memorable vintage. Not quite bright. Dense ruby. Rather beguiling and complex. Very evolved nose. Pungent and very ripe. Sweet and gentle yet with really lovely structure . Already charming but it doesn’t seem by any means fully resolved. Dry finish. Real vigour here and persistence too. (JR)
