Very ripe biscuity nose. Unusual. Rather sickly perfume. Lots of acidity – out of balance. Not enough fruity charm in the middle. Very drying on the finish. Astringent – which it shouldn’t be at 10 years old. [From the closing years of the Valette era] (JR)

Medium plum/ruby in color, with a distinctive peppery, leafy, spicy nose with vague hints of red cherry and currant fruit, this is a rigid, austere wine with an angular personality and severe tannin. There is some ripe fruit on the attack, but that is quickly dominated by the wine's structural components. This may turn out to be a pleasant wine, but my best guess is that it will dry out. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2010.

Elegant and refined. Floral and fruity, with roses and blackberries. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity, chocolate aftertaste. Best after 1999. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1998
