Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Troplong-Mondot has long been a Saint Emilion that has surpassed the vintage. It has a sophisticated bouquet with crushed strawberry, fresh mint and subtle gamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannin on the entry, the fruit a little darker and the personality a little broodier than the Canon-la-Gaffelière, gently fanning out on the almost Pomerol-like finish. Probably à point, but it will give another decade's worth of pleasure. Tasted February 2017.
Mid ruby with soft bricky rim. Leafily mature aromas of undergrowth and a hint of beef extract. Fragrant and a touch smoky. Denser on the palate than some, the tannins resolved but not quite as soft on the finish as either Les Grandes Murailles or Canon La Gaffelière just tasted. A bit tough and abrupt on the finish. (JH)
About the producer
This estate – promoted in 2006 to Premier Grand Cru Classé B – is perched at the highest point in Saint-Emilion. Aymeric de Gironde has been managing the property since 2017 and guided it to new heights.
