Score 93/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous
Deep ruby-red, the most saturated of these '98 pinots. Briary black cherry, rose petal, cola and white pepper on the nose. Thick, fat and rich; a lush, spherical pinot that's really stuffed with fruit. Pungently peppery at the core. Can't match the Precious Mountain for finesse, but this outsized wine offers huge extract and palate-staining finishing fruit. Tannins are substantial but fine. The big boy in the cellar in '98.
