Score 96/100 · Drink 2002-2020, Robert Parker, Jun 2001

Giacosa's 1997 Barbaresco Rabaja boasts a fabulous nose of caramel, soy, herbs, black cherries, plums, and kirsch. Dense and full-bodied, with a spectacular, silky texture, gobs of glycerin, and a layered, multidimensional palate, it is immensely satisfying from both hedonistic and intellectual perspectives. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020. A Leonardo Locascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620

Good medium red with an amber edge. Rich, meaty aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, game, underbrush and tobacco. Lush and sweet in the mouth, with fresh acidity giving the wine lovely vinosity. Not a hugely fleshy wine but smooth and harmonious. Finishes long and lively, with firm tannins for the vintage.
