The 2010 Barolo La Rosa is going to need a few years to soften, as the tannins are imposing and impenetrable at this stage. A core of bright, red-tone fruit intermingled with floral and spice notes struggles to emerge from beneath a wall of tannin as the wine opens up in the glass. There is good depth and persistence, but the elements haven't fully come together just yet.

The delightful 2010 Barolo Fontanafredda Vigna La Rosa shows enormous promise but needs more time to integrate. This wine was first produced in 1964 and recently “Fontanafredda” was established as a vineyard cru. This means that the Fontanafredda estate would be the only company in Barolo to produce a wine with a personalized single vineyard namesake. Dark fruit and spice is folded within the tight tannic structure of the wine. Drink: 2017-2032. I had the chance to taste through various flights of wine with Fontanafredda winemaker Danilo Drocco and owner Andrea Farinetti (son of Oscar Farinetti) during my last visit to Piedmont. The base Barolo sports a redesigned label with a clean, retro look. Importer: Palm Bay, www.palmbay.com

Serralunga d’Alba. Youthful-looking ruby with only the beginning of orange on the rim. Nose shows a hint of oak, and bacon with a smoky edge. Sweet-sour cherry palate with thick, coating tannins. A little bit smoky on the finish and perhaps just a tiny bit unripe. (WS)
