Tasting notes
Largely in the same style as the base Summa Vineyard, the 2019 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard Old Vines comes from a tiny selection from this estate vineyard located far out on the Sonoma Coast. It reveals a similar translucent ruby hue as well as gorgeous aromas of framboise, mulberries, dried herbs, crushed stone, and white flowers. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied Pinot Noir with a rounded, supple texture, slightly more tension and focus than the base cuvée, and just a gorgeous finish. It’s far from unapproachable today, yet it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for over a decade. This is another brilliant Pinot Noir from this team that readers are going to love to have in the cellar.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines is a special wine. In most vintages, the Old Vines can be a bit fleeting and diffuse, especially in its mid-palate, but not here. The 2019 Summa Old Vines offers a beguiling mix of aromatic presence, beautifully textured fruit and plenty of backing structure. Rose petal, cinnamon, sweet red berry, mint and pine add a brilliant aromatic upper register. The 100% new oak is not at all perceptible. The 2019 is one of the best editions of the Summa Old Vines I can remember tasting. Don't miss it.
