The 2021 St. Eden is one of the most changed wines in the BOND portfolio, because of a decision some years ago to pull back on the concentrated, extracted style that characterized early years. I am not at all surprised. In 2017, I attended a tasting where the Harlan family opened every wine they had ever made at BOND. St. Eden was very clearly the wine that showed the most variability in aging. Floral and red-fruited, the 2021 is all elegance. Silky tannins wrap around it all, leading to a finish marked by precision and tension, but with no hard edges. This is a real standout.
The 2021 St. Eden boasts gorgeous freshness and energy to play off its customary richness. Crushed rocks, savory herbs, lavender, menthol and plum race across the palate. The 2021 is a serious, exceptionally poised St. Eden that needs time to be at its very best. I admire its precision and tension. Over the last decade or so, the style of St. Eden has moved to an approach that favors more tension than in the early days. The results are in the glass. What a wine!
