Mature and evolved, the 1998 Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape exhibits loads of mature red fruits, forest floor, leather, and autumn leave characteristics and flavors on the nose. While slightly tired aromatically, this is still kicking on the palate with good fruit, medium body, and solid precision on the finish. Given the aromatic profile paired with the palate, I would line these up for drinking over the coming year or two to ensure you catch it while it’s still showing fruit.

The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a terrific nose of spice box, cherry jam, pepper, and assorted berries. It is medium to full-bodied, with plenty of glycerin, moderately sweet tannin, a fat mid-palate, and a dense, thick, powerful finish. Already accessible, it promises to last for another 10-15 years. Represented by Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel. (908) 771-9082, various American importers including Silenus Wines, Boston MA; V.O.S. Selections, New York, NY; Tropical Wines, Pompano Beach, FL; Import!, Madison, WI; and Elliott Bay Distributing, Seattle, WA.

The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a saturated purple color as well as a terrific nose of black fruits intermixed with licorice. Sweet (from ripeness, not sugar), this deep, intensely concentrated, full-bodied wine explodes at the back of the palate revealing copious quantities of glycerin, extract, and the vintage's fabulous ripeness. The tannin is buried under the lavish fruit, glycerin, and overall intensity. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2015. Importer: New Castle Imports, Myrtle Beach, SC; tel. (843) 497-8625
