Tasting notes
(with 8% petit verdot) Good bright red-ruby. Highly soil-inflected aromas of cassis, licorice, clove and minerals, with floral and herbal nuances adding complexity. A step up in intensity from the foregoing samples, showing a classic claret-like profile of cassis, licorice, graphite and stony minerality. Densely packed and very long, finishing with sweet but serious tannins. From Clone 6 planted in gravelly soil.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard (92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot) comes from a gravelly site on the west side of Highway 29. Gun flint, crushed rock, blueberry, black currant, violet, and subtle wood characteristics are accompanied by a deep, full-bodied, stunningly rich, well-proportioned Cabernet with well-integrated tannin. It should evolve for two decades or more. An outstanding, small, high quality winery that did not make it into my Napa report in issue #186, Realm has turned out a beautiful portfolio of 2007 reds, all of which are made at Chateau Boswell in Napa Valley. The innovative blends (all dedicated to William Shakespeare) are of very high quality. Tel. (707) 967-0226; Fax (707) 967-0227
(includes 8% petit verdot) Saturated, bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of crushed cassis, violet and licorice are lifted by a minty nuance. Sweet, densely packed and extremely young, with a deep, brooding core of very ripe black and red fruit flavors. Verging on monolithic today and yet the texture is silky and the flavors wonderfully pure. The tannins are currently hidden by the wine's superb material. Finishes with red berries, cinnamon and clove, plus a touch of crushed stone. This beauty will need time to unwind.
