Score 96/100 · Drink 2023-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2023

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is largely in the same ballpark, although it’s slightly darker and more concentrated. Full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, tobacco, spice, camphor, and chocolate oak, as well as a touch of minerality, define the bouquet, and it has ripe, polished tannins and a great finish. It’s another knockout bottle of wine readers will be thrilled to have in the cellar. As with the 2012, drink bottles over the coming decade.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits graphite, blackberry and cassis, chocolate and a touch of mineral in a full-bodied, layered and impressively pure style. It’s a big wine for Stags Leap (15.4% alcohol), but gorgeously pure, with everything well-knit into a sensational equilibrium. This is only a baby, but promises to hit its peak in 7-10 years and last 25-30.

Odette's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is dark, plump and juicy. Black cherry, plum, spice, mint and licorice meld together in an expressive, layered Cabernet Sauvignon. The style is forward, open-knit and succulent, with considerable near and medium term appeal. A host of sweet red cherry, plum, hard candy and lavender meld into the finish. The Estate should drink well with minimal cellaring.

A terrific example of the year, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate brings together the energy of the vintage along with the deep, inky fruit that is such a signature of Stags' Leap Cabernets. This is an especially finessed wine for the year, though, and the tannins are quite tamed, which will provide readers with what looks like a good early accessibility today. Mint, nutmeg and orange peel add nuance on the expressive, perfumed finish. Dollops of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot round out the blend.
