In 2017 I suggested the 2001 St. Eden was a wine best enjoyed over the next few years. This tasting confirms that impression. The style at BOND back in 2001 yielded wines that at times seem to have relatively narrow windows of optimal drinking, meaning the wines take a number of years to soften, but then age relatively quickly. That's my impression here. There's plenty of power and textural intensity to the dark fruit, and yet the aromatics are quite mature. The 2001 will hold for at least a few more years, but I don't see it improving.

Once again, the riveting allure of the 2001 vintage comes through in Bond’s St. Eden. A vertical sense of structure and layers of dark fruit infuse this virile, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon. Like many of the St. Edens in this complete retrospective, the 2001 does not appear to be built for very long aging, I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years.

Deep ruby-red. Reticent nose shows currant and a balsamic quality, and little of the sweetness promised by the aromas of the 2002. Then very concentrated, tactile and deep in the mouth; less creamy and sweet than the 2002 but remarkably penetrating for its age owing to its solid spine. This firmly tannic wine is less evolved than the 2002 and would appear still to have a long evolution ahead of it. (ST)
