First made in 2008 with the goal to make a high-quality, affordable wine, the 2014 Db4 is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend that offers high-class notes of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, licorice, graphite and a touch of toasty oak. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and with notable structure, it’s a great wine for readers looking for an introduction to the wines of this great estate. Unfortunately, my visit at Bryant Family was cut short due to the approaching fire (it started raining ash and we thought it best to abandon ship) and I couldn’t taste the 2015s, but I’ll do my best to report on these as soon as possible. The 2014s all show the silky, elegant side to the vintage and are beautiful wines.

The 2014 Proprietary DB4 showed loads of black cherry, a good bit of wood spice, earth, and a medium to full body. This wine has Pomerol lushness, but also aromatics reminiscent of a great grand cru red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits. It is perfumed, medium-bodied and beautifully textured and pure. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

The 2014 DB4 is an exceptional wine. Dark and mysterious, with silky, polished tannins, the 2014 DB4 will give readers a very good look at the quality level at Bryant this year. Succulent red cherry, plum, flowers, mint and lavender grace the palate in a very pretty, delicate wine endowed with striking purity and finesse. The DB4 may very well be the single greatest value in high-end Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard sites are: Bryant, Madrona Ranch, Thorevilos and Abreu Las Posadas. It just doesn't get better than that. The 2014 probably doesn't have the structure to age for more than a decade or so, but it is absolutely delicious today.
