(aged in 30% new French oak barriques but Force Majeure increased its use of large-format casks for its Rhône wines as of the 2016 vintage): Bright, dark medium ruby. Aromas of dark berries are complicated by notes of nutty oak, cumin and turmeric. Slightly porty black fruit flavors are fat, open-knit and sweet. In a softer, low-acid style (the pH here is 3.95), this wine finishes firm and slightly herbal. Made mostly from vines on sandy soil. (15% alcohol)

Moving to the reds, the Mourvèdre-dominated 2015 Parvata GSM is a smoking effort loaded with deep, rich aromas and flavors of blackberries, currants, cured meats, and a hint of chocolate. It’s full-bodied, deep, concentrated, and perfectly balanced, and is a sensational wine. Now focusing almost exclusively on their Red Mountain estate vineyards, Force Majeure is making some of the most compelling wines in Washington State, as well as in the United States. Winemaker Todd Alexander (previously at Bryant Family in Napa Valley) came on board in 2014 and today the wines show another level of purity and finesse, all while not sacrificing depth of fruit or texture. Both the 2015s and 2016 are terrific wines, with a small edge going to the 2016s. Trust me, these are gorgeous wines you need to try.

The Mourvèdre-dominated 2015 Parvata is jaw dropping good, and lovers of top examples of Mourvèdre will need to latch onto bottles of this. Blackberries, currants, cured meats and hints of chocolate give way to a full-bodied, deep, layered and thrillingly textured red that has polished tannin and a big finish.
