Dom Pérignon’s 1964 is another stunner. Wow. Here it is the wine’s detail and precision that really stand out. Hints of smoke and slate add nuance, but that is selling this majestic Champagne short. The 1964 is a wine to drink and simply enjoy for the pure pleasure it provides, without thinking too much.

The 1964 Dom Pérignon (magnum, believed to be a 1970s release) was served later in the evening, after the first five 1964 Dom Pérignons. In many ways, the best was saved for last, as this profound Champagne delivered an incredible drinking experience. Hazelnuts, dried apricots and spices lingered on the eternal finish.
An assortment of Dom Pérignons was no less impressive. The 1964 Dom Pérignon was hauntingly beautiful as it revealed incredible purity and freshness, with gorgeous hazelnuts, ash and smoke that lingered on the sublime finish. This remains one of my very favorite pre-1970s vintages of DP.
The 1964 Dom Pérignon presented notable density and richness in an engaging, generous style. It was less complex than the other wines in this flight and came across as somewhat two-dimensional, but it opened up beautifully over the course of the night.
