Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Nov 2022

The 2018 Le Charlemagne Grand Cru feels rather one-dimensional on the nose and lacks terroir expression. The palate is rounded with Satsuma and peach on the entry, fine acidity, yet simple and missing some tension on the finish. Some oxidation here. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Charlemagne Grand Cru has turned out nicely, unwinding in the glass with scents of frangipane, fresh pear, Meyer lemon, white flowers and praline. Medium-bodied, delicate and fine-boned, its elegantly textural attack segues into an attractively ample mid-palate that's girdled by bright acids, concluding with an understated but nicely penetrating finish.

The 2018 Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from two parcels in Le Charlemagne, in Aloxe-Corton and En Charlemagne on the Pernand side, picked one week apart since the latter takes longer to ripen. It has an excellent bouquet of intense pressed flowers and chalk-infused citrus fruit. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, poised and pretty, revealing orange peel and touches of ginger toward the finish. Drink over the next 12–15 years.
