Dark crimson without much blue. Lovely freshness on the nose as well as richness. Warm and welcoming. Round and spicy with some ripe tannins still there in abundance. Peter Gago likes Bin 28 at between 15 and 20 years but admits you could drink this already. Great density. (JR)

(raised in used American oak): Dark purple. A pungent bouquet displays scents of ripe blackberry and cassis, vanilla, floral pastilles, clove and woodsmoke. Deep, supple and sweet, offering black and blue fruit flavors accented by black pepper and licorice. Broad, rich and lively, with fine-grained tannins that give focus and grip to the finish.
The South Australia GI for Kalimna (now their registered trade mark) signifies that Penfolds long since started to source fruit for this popular wine far beyond their Kalmina vineyard in the Barossa. Indeed it is probably one of the most challenging blending decisions. It is smooth and friendly with notes of dark chocolate, sweetness and spice but is amazingly accessible already. Prices vary considerably. Easy and friendly, it has a reputation for ageing well too. Certainly South Australia in a bottle. Briary. But without the sheer excitement of their top bottlings, even in this blessed vintage. (JR)
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz presents lovely, expressive blueberry, black raspberry and black cherries notes highlighted by violets, toast, cinnamon stick and touch of mulberries. Full-bodied and rich, the concentrated fruit is framed by medium levels of rounded tannins, crisp acid and a long, classically-styled finish. Approachable now, it will drink to 2020+.
